250 HO prop question
I have a 250 HO on a 08 cougar FTD with a 6" hyd plate, running a moderate load. I am able to post some blistering top speeds but unable to find a prop that will give me a great or even good hole shot with decent top speeds. I have a suspicion it is in large part due to the 1:71 gear ratio. I have tried 25, 26 raker II's and merc trophy 25, 26 and tempest as well. All are "ok" when by myself with empty wells and half tank of fuel but with 2 people full wells and fuel horrible at best. I have been working with a couple people with same problems and we have spent thousands of $$ trying to find the perfect prop with no success. I know its not a basscat only problem as I have seen it on rangers and stratos as well. The common denomator is the 250 HO. Anyone else having this problem and if so what was the solution. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 250 HO prop question (bigbass225)
Denny i feel your pain as you well know. I am waiting on Larry to get back to me as he is suppossed to be finding our solution. The bravo 1 was decent on holeshot but i lost 7 mph, the fury is the best i have found to this point but still not a good holeshot. fury has the best top end. i have a new 27 tempest, a new 25 tempest, a mazco hp 4,and a 25 trophy to play with this weekend. i will let you know if i find the answer but I AGREE IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT AND BRP SHOULD BE DOING ALL THIS TESTING NOT US!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
BRP should do the testing? Does Merc and Yamaha do that? I feel yer pain guys but...you will find the right combo.
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
Merc and yamaha make props to run on there motors and perform as they should!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They did their testing already!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey i like my ho but should not have 3k worth of wheels to find an answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if i call any merc/cat dealer and tell him i have a 250 pro xs and ask what prop ineed they can all tell you and get you very very close with 1-2 quesses. i havent found anybody yet to get us there nor has Denny!
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Its a give and take...you either want max speed and give up a little holeshot, great holeshot and lose a little top end....
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
I understand the game as well as you have been doing it many years but shouldnt have to give up 6-7 mph and spend 800 plus dollars on a prop to hole shot. I can run right at 83 with a fury, decent holeshot with a B&B bravo 1 that runs 76. i have an 08 sitting here with a 08 225 early with 186 gears thaqt runs that with a 400 tempest and better on fuel. If i have to run 76 with a 250 why have it? I could understand 79-80 with a good holeshot. So yes i know the give and take game as does Denny

Re: 250 HO prop question (bigbass225)
I´ve solved with a trophy playing with the rubber taps. You have to iniciate
with all 4 with the 12 mm hole and larger until the boat start to cavitate in
hole shot. I´ll measure the exact hole left this weekend and send to you

Re: 250 HO prop question (quest290)
trophy doesnt work on our rides!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 25,26 and 27. I do know there was some testing done today by some folks at brp on rigs like ours. we will see where it goes! I am happy to see we arent being ignored. Just hope we or they can find the answer.
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
I understand what you are sayin blue, however there is no middle ground I would be happy with a prop that I could get a good hole shot and decent speeds. You either get good hole shot or good top end there is no middle ground. I shouldnt have to give up 7-8 mph to get a hole shot!!!

Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
I have 2 28 BravoI's, one is bone stock and the other has been worked extensively by Mark.I run the worked one with 4 lower holes plugged and the outer holes with the large plugs. Tournament loaded with 1/2 half tank of gas, live wells empty and no partner I come out of the hole with an immediate 4600 and start trimming immediately. The prop pulls all the way thru with no hint of a blowout. Top end at 5850 is about 76. I have run this boat 79.1 with a Mark worked 27 TXP, but was winter time and was too impatient to work with the plugs to get a decent holeshot. I am now back to testing. The new Bravo will go to Mark as soon as I have a few more runs with it. Have gotten RPM up to 4000 on launch need 4500 min. I was on Lake wheeler last week in stormy weather and never had an opportunity to run WOT.

Re: 250 HO prop question (bigbass225)
hello guys
I´ve measured the holes in the rubber inserts in my trophy. I have 3 with 12mm and 1 with 8 mm. It´s working for me

Re: 250 HO prop question (quest290)
Guys I know that the hydromotive props have had good success as well here locally on Rangers with similar issues. My ftd with a 26 fury doesnt have issues though Doug. Strange. Although it's still in California Doug- and has a hydraulic plate.

What has BassCat done for you, since they make the boat and rig it to run with different engines?

Well they have done a lot but its not a boat issue when there hull works fine with the other 2 major brands . Not to mention the holesahot issues are alive and well with 250 HO's on all sorts of hulls!Dont belive it go to an flw tour event and watch the rangers take off with them.
But if you want I can start making a list of lots of others with the same issue who said i could use their names if it comes to it!!!!!!!! Oh and they are in other boats as well! But i dont think this is the time or place but it might be in the coming days! But I hope we can get things resloved and thats what this post was about !

So i quess Andy in Tenn with puma and Denny in wisconsin are all imagining these issues!I guess since BRP rep couldnt make it work either last week he must have as well. Not trying to bash right now just looking for answers. We have all tried many props and setups and i have had my boat 2 months and fished once. the rest has been setup and such. The hydromotive is the same as the bravo 1 worked by croxton. It does make it a little better but it kills about 6-9 mph. So why have a 250 that runs 75 and drinks fuel with the setup when there is a 225 ho parked next to it with 186's on the same hull runs 76-77 with half the fuel!
I could solve the issues with a gear case swap but i am not going to start wrenching on a 2 month old motor. i could put a 186 gearcase with a 28 raker 2 or a 27 fury and break your neck on holeshot. i even have it good authority that there are some lightning gear cases out there with 186's in the new gears. If i spend 3 more thousand it be to change colors. i really hope it dont come to that maybe we will get some help. i know denny who started this post is wating to order his 2010 because of this issue and he is like me and doesnt want to switch but may have to.

Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Doug, I too have tried many props, my boat is as heavy, maybe heavier than yours. A 27 Fury worked by Mark should work for you guys.No prop out of the box works well.

Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
mark built the tempest 26 and the bravo1 26. i got enough money in props and jack plates to buy a alum boat!

Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
I don't have a dog in this fight, but have witnessed this problem. I drove Muncie's new Stratos / 250 ETEC HO and it is almost impossible to get out of hole with any kind of decent top end speed. He has posted here and on the Stratos forum several times with his problem. Both of us are experienced tournament anglers with many different boat and motor combinations.
Seahorse and BRP needs to realize this is a gearing problem with the 250 ETEC HO. Not a boat or setup problem.
This is coming from an ETEC fan. I have a 2007 Ranger 520 with a 2007 225 ETEC HO that jumps out of the hole and will run 72 gps with a tournament load.

Re: 250 HO prop question (TomW)

thats my point i have an 08 cougar ftd with an 07 225 ho that flies out the hole in nano seconds and will run 77 on half the fuel as this one. i would go trade my 250 back in for a 225 if they still used the 186's on them!
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
You have said 'half the fuel' several times so what are the different fuel flow rates? I am curious as I would like to know the differences and compare to mine.
BTW, I have an 08 225HO ETEC with the L2 gearcase and so far my holeshot is pretty dang nice and top end is up by 6 MPH over my previous Johnson 225HO.
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (Mark Weare)
dont know fuel flows we know what goes back in the tank on the way home. i burn 12 gallons to every 6-7 gallons on the 225 with 186's. Hope this helps but best we figure is over 5 mpg out the 225 and 2.5 out the 250.

Lone is spelled Loan= let me borrow one. You fellas are close to getting a lock tossed on this thread. I'm letting it go,, but NO MORE NAME DROPPING. BRP has tested props and has their own design. This is the first year for the new gear case. Let's give it a chance you all called for a new case.

Im curious as to what you mean by "name dropping" and why a lock would be tossed on this thread?
As for the gear case, I agree something needs to be done but how much $$$ should the average customer "give it a chance". My opinion is that the average guy will discover it doesn't work and trade it in on one that does, most likely another brand. Is that the "give it a chance" BRP is looking for, I would like to think not. I hope that "give it a chance" was not a corporate response?

C'mon guys!! Get real! The ratio isn't that far from the Merc cases that every body wanted. Merc owners have always had many more prop designs simply because it took many different kinds for different setups. Give it a chance, this is the first year for the higher gear ratio for BRP, personally I like the 1.86 ratio....JMHO

There seems to be an issue with the BCB line and this motor. A Stratos owner has posted his results, a Triton owner has posted his results, a Ranger owner has posted his results. All satisfactory to their owners. The NAME Dropping mentioned had been edited out by Doug by request. He rephrased it to a BRP rep.
Give it a chance is not a corporate response it is a personal one. Having been in this business for a long time I have seen many whiners saying we want a Merc gear set. Well BRP has provided one to you. I was informed last night that BCB has only known about the new LU for less than 2 months. So you tell me.
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (ChampioNman)
Lets start this over I also have been in this business for a long time and not a whiner. I was simply asking a question that seems cannot be answered by anyone. As for it being a BCB problem I beg to differ one of my friends has already traded his stratos 201/ 250 HO, because of this reason. I am not trying to offend anyone nor am I looking to have my intelligence insulted. Has anyone tried a set of 1:86 gears on a 250HO? That is the only combo I have not tried as of yet.
-
Re: 250 HO prop question (ChampioNman)
Championman this is NOT a Cat alone issue. If you want me to start dropping names of people in other rides I will. It is and I REPEAT IS A BRP ISSUE WITH THIS PROBLEM! There is a stratos post several lines up of this issue and can giove you a couple names of folks who done ditched their HO's.
1) We are trying to work thru the problem but not getting much help just a bunch of bs runaround!
2) We have not started bashing BRP or our motors YET! As we are trying to make it work!
3)
Some folks talk lots of noise when they didnt spend 15-16k on a motor that does not do what it should! I bet if you buy a new vehicle and it gives you problems you squalk as well!
4)This is just why I asked Al to read this post before the mods got involved cause i new where it would go. Everytime somebody questions whats being done they have thew attitude BRP does no wrong.
To all of you I am not mad the motor has an issue. I am mad that people who havent spent a dime think i dont have a right to.
Just as I told championman last night any company can have an issue. What seperates a company from a GOOD COMPANY IS HOW THEY ADDRESS THE ISSUES!
I dont know where you got the BCB only knew of the L2 for 2 months?? I do know they are trying to get us some help and they have only known for a short time there were issues on holeshot with these motors on their rigs as well as others. But when the 186 225 work fine on the same hull and you add 25-30 hp and change a gear set now no holeshot could it really be a hull issue?

Re: 250 HO prop question (bigbass225)
The L2 gearcase came out at the behest of consumers who wanted a different case. BRP designers came up with that ratio. If you read through the threads you will see that the majority of the owners with problems are BCB owners. That is my point. The other boat owners that have had good results posted they are happy. Nobody here tried to insult your intelligence.

Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
I quess i was mistaken as I thought this is where you addressed issues with your motors.i quess that only applies if someone has an easy answer that isnt under warranty!
