Anyone have any idea(s) to better protect the mid section from getting scuffed. Any I have seen with it installed, the tape application hasn't helped very much.

May not look the best but foam water pipe insulation?
You put something that heavy in contact with a surface that moves and shakes that much, especially the plastic chaps, and its going to rub and look bad. You just gotta decide if the safety outweighs the damage.
What point is your Leash attached to?
Maybe a cable sock around it would help.
I’ve got one I put it on last summer. I haven’t noticed any scuffing so far, but maybe you could double or triple up the clear protector or find something a bit thicker.
Paint Protection Film (clear bra). Would be a couple hundred bucks to have a shop apply the film but will invisibly do the job. My engine and top cap are fully wrapped and it has saved my rig from several scratches and gouges.

WHAT safety does a leash give you? What advantage does it have? We run around in 2' of water in 90 mph+ flats fishing boats and nobody uses them. If you hit something, you want the lower unit to kick up (and if it kicks up high enough the prop will lose bite so it's not trying to propel itself forward anymore), instead of a leash trying to rip the transom off. If you knock the motor off (which I've never seen)the last thing you want is it still trying to propel the boat and into the boat while it's not attached to the boat.Quote:

I’m all with you on trying to keep things looking nice! I’ve used automotive vinyl wrap on the gunnels of my Aluminum boat to hide and keep from getting more scratches and it’s done fine. This stuff comes in clear and high gloss black. Nice thing about this is it’s easy to put on and take off. If it were to get scratched up over time you can replace it and your back to looking good!

No, and I'm willing to bet neither have you! It's such a rare occurrence that it almost never happens. I saw the one video of the motor driving itself through the bass boat, which was from a broken jackplate and a leash wouldn't have helped because motor was attached to jackplate. Usually if a motor hits something like a big log, it's getting ripped off of the transom and a leash is just going to get snapped off of the transom too.Quote:

Anything can happen. It is such a rare occurrence that you have a higher probability dieing from something falling off of an airplane and hitting you on the head or winning the powerball and I haven't met any powerball winners yet. Those are facts. Fatal accidents from steering loss on boats is a much much higher probability. I've seen a 20' boat sling a blade at 90 mph and the blade land in someone else's boat luckily not hitting anything, it lodge itself 1/2 way into the deck, there's a higher chance of that or it landing in the boat it's propelling.Quote:
