You would have to be in Zero ft of water.
The end of the rope always have to be touching the bottom except when the water column is deeper then the rope and then the rope hangs straight down.

In this scenario the "ground" is the top of the water. If you are marking something on the screen it is a horizontal distance from the boat.
If you are in 100' of water and there is a stump 25' directly to the side of the boat it is not 125' from the ducer but about 102'.
