So a quick update on the Honda BF 150. It makes well over 300 HP on the dyno.
The block is sleeved with coated Ramey Racing sleeves. Large bore pistons from Wiseco. Saenz Performance connecting rods. ECU by MoTec. And, a custom 4 Piston Racing cylinder head for this application.

I have had a couple of Honda Civic SI's, and they have absolutely no torque--something that is really needed in marine applications. The horsepower on these engines comes from the VVT function which is essenetially switches the porting like a power valve on a two stroke motorcross motorcycle.
My Civic runs like a 150 horsepower motor up to about 5000 rpms where the camshaft shifts valve timing and the engine just explodes. Frankly, it's not very useable horsepower as it's flat on the floor power. Just driving around town, the cars are rather lifeless except between 5000 and 7000 rpms. And even then it takes a 6 speed tranny to use it.
I could see where a lot of beefing up of the engine would help, but getting the real horsepower is a balance between VVT, extremely high tech head porting and relatively huge carbs or a fuel injection throttle body. And every bit would require very, very expensive parts.
But no one can get 10,000 rpms to the prop. Even if a gear case would hold up, propeller technology may not be available today to handle a prop turning 5000 rpms with a 2:00:1 gear ratio. It all costs money--big money.

I was talking about this with my son, wondering what happened to it.
When I hang an engine on the back, I want to turn the key, let it warm up and be reliable. I'm not changing lower units and having someone go to tinkering with my engine. I'll pay for the HP up front and go fish.
