Echomap 95SV screenshots

those flickr images are from the screen shot contest. most are from the 1040xs which is the same chirp as the 7600 series. some are from the 7600 series. those are the ones that list the transducer in use

sidevue is for finding structure, not fish. doesnt matter what manufacturer. can you find fish with it? yes, but thats not the intended purpose


maybe its a problem with the 95sv or the transducer? maybe its an install problem? i sure dont have any problem seeing fish on my 7612xsv with the gt50

Yea troy I am just meaning the 93sv. Seems the upper Garmin's do well the chirp models,semper di from the hulltruth lied to me as well said you can see fish well and he wouldn't take the unit back after 2 months.
Lol he told me yea 200khz looks good and you can see fish well on side vu when all along he had never had a 93sv he had the upper chirp 7610 I think.
So he lied to make a sale pretty much.

thats simply because the resolution with the chirp transducers is much better

I think this whole side view fish finding info can lead to unrealistic repeatable expectations. Also, this thread can lead to the un-informed experiencing disappointment. I've always used SideView for structure and cover discovery that will help me discover prime areas to locate fish then go back over to locate schools on 2D and DI. More so on the 2D side for fish display. I've been in more then enough boats with pro fisherman and guides who use the technology this way. Not the only way but seems that is how I see them use it. 2D and Down Imaging is used most to locate schools of fish. I've been out to many times with my Humminbirds and Lowrance and very very seldom do I experience schools displayed on my Humminbird and HDS side imaging. So infrequent I don't bother doing it anymore. If it was so easily repeatable you'd see pics all over BBC with everyone showing off their SI displayed images. In reality you don't see it that often. Believe what you want to believe I know what my expectations are and repeatable fish finding with side imaging is not one of them for me. If it is repeatable show me the settings for SI displays (HB or HDS). I'll be happy to say thank you and be corrected. Would'nt be the first time. :thumb up2:

Here are some new images From the St-Laurence river, more precisely in lake St-Louis just south on Montreal, that lake holds a good populatrion of big 25kgs sturgeons. There was lot's of debris in the water today, it was hard to get a clean screenshot.
I really liked the grayscale colour scheme, I played quite a bit with the contrast setting. The images are a lot grainier on this post then they are on the unit. I circled what I think is a fish with it's shadow in one of the shots, maybe a big sturgeon??? :ohwell: If that is a fish, witch I think it is, I guess it solves one of the major questions about this basic innexpensive non CHIRP unit...

Astrology lol I hate the gamin but just to help I think your ducer is not high enough I got alot better side scan with mine it took a lot of playing to get it right but the farther above bottom of transom my side scan got way better but since it is all in one ducer 2d gets worse even though it's bad anyway..so it would read bottom at 30mph and have good side scan took a lot of minor adjustments.

Take a look at the fish you circled and go back to the other images. There are several fish in some of those shots.

Finding fish in "sparse" weeds can, and is, done. It takes some tweaking to the settings and a lot of experience but it's possible.

Fish can be found and caught using the Si. I think it was a couple of years ago that the Crappie Masters national championship was won by a team from Mn or Ia using nothing but Si. They were spotting the fish on the Si and pulling cranks by them with planer boards. They stated in the article that trolling over them was spooking the fish so they relied heavily on Si. I think the top three teams used this tactic and they were all from the northern states.

The tournament that year was on Grenada Lake in Ms. It is one of the worst places you will ever fish for snags. All of the fish they caught were in the brush.

You're right, after taking a closer look I can see other fish, it's not very obvious,,, you know.. I guess I need more practice with side vu, but I do like the technology. Walleye fishing is all about bottom types and structures. side vu is a winner for that application in my book no matter if I can see fish or not.

You'll see the stuff and the untrained eyes won't, the fish are usually just specks depending on your range settings - but you said it.
Bottom types & structure can be discerned with some practice and after a while it may become second nature to you.
Whatever brand you choose, like or dislike ~ we've got some great tools to pick apart the watery world below.

Astrochris, your pic is a good example why I don't depend on Sideview out in sunlight conditions for identifying fish. It's great to look at under the roof at home but not so easy out on the lake in bright sun light. It can be done but you better have very large graph and immense amount of patience and experience. Now maybe the next generation upgrade (suggestion) would be to color code fish with contrasting color like red, lime green, yellow. At the least just a thought enhance and advance SideImaging fish identificaiton.

That's a great suggestion ..... If they can do it with 2D they should be able to do it with SI.

It does take practice and a lot of time using a unit while playing with the settings. It's a lot easier if you live in an area that the water isn't hard 8 months out of the year :laugh:

Out with my buddy on Lake Champlain yesterday trolling deep (95') for lake trout. Wind was present all day with gusts at 20 knots and 1 to 3 foot waves :sick:
Tried some side vu shots in 150 feet, I know side vu is not intended for deep waters but I wanted to see how well it performed in these conditions. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with how well it performed, as I said, in these windy conditions the 16 foot boat was rocking up and down witch gave me some bizarre side echo returns. I think that the horizontal lines in the side vu images are caused by the boat's movement in the waves, some areas not scanned and some are scanned twice, please correct me if I'm wrong...
The down vu worked very well in 100 to 150 feet of water and showed me bait balls and fish thru ought the water column.
We had a great day with 6 Lakers and my buddy with a monster brown trout..

Picture 2 shows the two downrigger balls.
Picture 6 shows thermocline... I think....
