I have followed plenty of trailers in the last 25 years of tournament fishing and see how well the transome saver helps. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif Motors bouncing all over the place and sometimes the transome saver falls off the roller and hits a crack in the cement and WHAM on the motor. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
My motor weighs 509 w/o the prop, and 2500 all together. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif On a 12 in jackplate... Pushing it over 80 mph..... In the waves. What part of stress on the transome dont you understand? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/roll.gif

No doubt your motor is trimmed up in trailering position when you're doing 80mph accross the lake. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif Yes there is stress but not for 4-5 hours and remember the motor is not suspended from a piece of Kevlar.
Do what you want; it's your transom. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif
Me I'm with fishnfireman http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif and will use the transom saver. BTW no letter "e" in transom. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Re: Transom Savers (Big Daddy)
Now wait a minute here big daddy.....while I try and visualize what you just wrote http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/glasses.gif
Ok---help me out here.
Someone hit you from behind http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif They hit your lower unit with there bumper ?
So with only a ram support, just where would all the force be directed ?
Seems to me that without any type of transom support the transom had to absorb all the kinetic energy of the impact. What is even worse, the mechanical advantage gained by the point of impact being at the lower end of the LU . http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emhammer.gif Would make for a lot bigger impact load being transferred directly to the transom.
Yes it might have bent the transom saver and skinned the trailer a little. But it would be better than having a cracked or stressed transom and not know it http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/crying.gif

I thought the same thing when I was reading it.....I don't think there is anyway having a regular transom saver on there could have messed up his transom. May have boogered his trailer a bit.
On this subject, all I can say is to each his own.....My boat has a bad transom (rot I am guessing) and if I tow without my transom saver, my motor looks like its going to fall off, but the saver holds it steady. And while I am on the lake it doesn't seem like it flexes that bad.....(I know I shouldn't run it, but I am just trying to use it to get me till I can afford another one)

Re: Transom Savers (Rudeman)
PERFECT explaination Rudeman!! The transom saver is not any worse than the other device.
Re: Transom Savers (onewht193)
Take a look at http://www.moto-stops.com . for another answer to the problem

This guy had an aluminum hull, but according to him using a ram type put more stress on his transom...I will stick to my old standby...

Re: Transom Savers (plbass)
I know I had a transom ( without the E) saver and had it break with me twice!!!! I got rid of it and started using the OMC factory bracket, and I'm not looking back to see if my motor is bouncing around anymore. Here's another way of looking at it that even an engineer could comprehend. Traveling down the road the motor is trimmed to it's max almost, then trimmed down to the wedge, factory bracket which is minimal. If you can picture this in your mind you will see the major weight of the engine (powerhead) is up over the back of the boat while the l/u is hanging off the back. JMHO I'm thinking this is pretty much a perfect DOWNWARD pressure than a cantilevered balance. All I know is my transom isn't showing any worse for it for the last 3 years.
Re: Transom Savers (Bassmeister)
Our family owned a glass boat since new in '78 with a V4 Evinrude. The factory trailering bracket was used it's entire life, never had a 'transom saver device' on it. When I sold the boat last year (29 years of use), it showed no signs of transom weakness . I used the same engine for a short time on my bass boat and also used the trailering lock on it also. I use a EZ now only because of the 10" setback, as my shift / throttle cables will bind on top of the transom when fully tilted. I believe I will change my setback to 4-6 inches so I can use the factory bracket , and also to avoid accidentally binding the cables. In short, why would the engine manufacturers have put a trailering bracket on it in the first place if it wasn't the ideal way to trailer it? It costs money to hang extra stuff on an outboard, and I'm sure it would have been cheaper to just give you a transom saver type device to the purchaser than it was to engineer a bracket and incorporate it into transom bracket assy. My .02 cents.
PS. I have never seen the my wedge, just telling my story about a 30 year old boat with a non damaged transom and the factory lock.
Re: Transom Savers (ta3834bbl)
I use a lock-n-stow. When i bought it, I put it on and had my girlfriend pull my boat down the highway (10 miles) with the lock-n-stow. I followed behind in her car. There was no movement at all. On the way back, the transom saver went back on... I could see ALOT of bouncing, movement, ect. I had it trimed all the way down on it, and had it strapped. I will never go back, its easy to use, and when I remove it, I throw it in a compartment.
I encourage anyone to try this and see for your self.

I did the same thing with the same results...........I now use my factory saver on my "J/E" and will not use the conventional again. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Re: Transom Savers (The Green Hornet)
I don't know. I just follow what the manufaturer of my motor says to use. I figure if a problem develops because of what thay say to use, then it's on them. If I use another product and there are issues I have just given them cause to say it is my fault. I use the transom saver bar that came with my boat package. It doesn't fall off because there is a pin holding it to the trailer and a rubber tie down holding it to the motor. I have never seen my motor bouncing independant from the trailer either.
Transom Savers (flounderhead59)
I have stopped all traditional transom savers in favor of the metal one called PRO RULE for $56 that fits over the tilt rods...its a winner and fits easily into your compartment PLUS if you forget you can remove it from the boat while on the water! Also has 2 thick plastic snaps on the steering rods to prevent side movement...
