Re: 250 HO prop question (ChampioNman)
If you read there is a statos owner with troubles as well as others.I have driven 2 rangers with HO's and they are dogs out the hole as well. Unless you say a 10-12 second holeshot is ok! Gunrunner and other s here and on the La boards can attest to my setup abilities and persistance. But i have thrown 4-5k and lots of time and effort at this in 8 weeks. denny has been fighting it a year. I will not wet to that point. So why is it you can call merc or yamaha and ask them what prop will work on this setup and they can tell you?Why cant you or anyone at BRP who should know if they sell and work on these?Point is nobody should have to go thru this!
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Here's my take on the 250HO...it's an awesome setup for the 201 I had and the Evo I am currently driving. A little tweaking with the right prop and you have a winner.
Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
seems others with the evo werent so lucky one sold one still fighting i know of.
Re: 250 HO prop question (Blue Steel)
who really cares what you have had enough of stop reading if you dont like it!

Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Doug and I do allot of fishing together and hes helped me settup my last 2 boats with great results . My current rig Is A 08 cougar ftd with A 225 HO and 186 gears , its got A great hole shot and pretty fast top speed to . We played with about 5 or 6 different props and in about 2 hrs I was very satisfied with the results . Weve been working on dougs boat now for about 2 months with moderate results and its getting kinda old now . I think Dougs kinda wishing hed bought A 225 , it dont sound like no one on here is whining to me it just sounds like there looking for A solution to the PROBLEM so they can get back in there and fish the shallow waters and put some fish in the boat and still beable to get on plane without tearing up there prop in the mud .
Re: 250 HO prop question (Gun Runner)
thanks Gene thats what Denny and i are both looking for an answer to a problem.i thought thats what these forums were for. I cant even tell you how many boats we setup this year already and this has me stumped.
Re: 250 HO prop question (bigbass225)
Wow!!!!
Wasn't expecting this kind of unhappiness with these outboards, I know that with this much technology in these motors, this much horse power and the sheer weight to power ratio, the only way to build it to alls expectations, is with time and error.
I too have the 250 HO, not much time spent on the water yet, but will post #s when I do.
But for the little I do have it seems to do what I want it to, though the gear ratio may change my prop as the summer months warm up the water, I still think it will be a good set up
Re: 250 HO prop question (luc levesque)
not overall unhappy with it. we have a holeshot issue ! if we can get help and solve this issue. I think the motors will be fine with some tweaking as with any. I hope that we can get some answers on this and everybody be happy. denny nor myself intend to bash Evinrude,BRP, or the ETEC but we do have a serious issue that needs to be addressed as do quite a few others out there in other types of boats! I have said and I maintain it is not a boat specific problem or a hull specific problem. I think there is a solution whether it be regearing, remapping, or repropping i dont know but there is always an answer! We are trying to find the person who has it!
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
No one has posted to this thread today, I thought it may have been locked. You can see my avatar and see what I drive and I have a few questions for ya'll. Now mind you I don't make a living with my rig, I don't even do any serious tournament fishing out of my rig but what I'd like to know is ...what do you expect of a loaded 1840# bass boat as far as launch, mid and top speed goes. I'm not taking sides and I'm not trying to be a smart azz. I too am looking for that sweet blade, one that can do it all. So far a Mark Croxton worked 28p BravoI is my fishing prop. I come out of the hole at 4600 and steady trim til on plane and then to WOT right now I will only take it to 58-5900 even tho it would like to go on up. That puts me at about 76 mph. With a load and partner it get's down to about 74. I have had the rig to 79.1 with a 3 blade 27p TXP also worked by Mark at 5850 rpm and I got scared of the squirm and let off plus it was the first day on the new motor. Since then I have been plagued with small problems, recalls, weather and other things such as the economy. I retired last year. If the weather would fair off I've got 3 props and one on the way to try. One a 4 blade and 3- 3blades. I have faith that if I can control the spin at launch enough to get out of the hole with 4000-4500 rpm without blowing out I'll have it licked. For the interim I'm loving my Bravo hole shot and can live with 76 mph..........at least til have exhausted all my options...........I can empathize with you guys that have more urgent needs.........G
Re: 250 HO prop question (Garfish)
Garland no offense taken. i get over 83 mph on my best wheel with a bad holeshot. i mean if i have a partner he's on the front deck to get up bad. I get over 80 on any prop i own except the bravo. here is the problem as we see it. Of all my props the best holeshot with 2 people and wells full full of fuel is the bravo and its 8.5-10 seconds and only runs 77 with one person 74 with 2. My prop i usually run has a 10-11 second holeshot runs 79 with 2 people and a full load. The bravo runs 75 with 2 loaded. My 08 sittin here with an 07 225ho runs a 27 tempest 77mph with 1 and 2 loaded to the gills and will holeshot in 5-6 seconds.I can take off with it in 3 foot of water no problem. the new one anything less than about 4-4.5' i am chewing up props and fuel. This thing uses about twice as much fuel and oil and I am convinced it is do to the struggling holeshot. Now some would have you believe its a Cat problem but if thats so why does the 186 geared 225 do so well as do the other brands? Also i see where there was a post of a stratos and can show you several rangers that are as bad as my Cat.So why have a 250 I have to run 74 to get out the hole on twice the fuel when my last 225 would do it on less and go faster?
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Put 3/4 tank full of gas tonight, will head out tomorrow and fill live wells and have numbers tomorrow night for ya.
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
I've been following this post because I have the same holeshot problem with my 08 Z520/250 HO/24P Raker II. As long as it's just me and a half tank of gas it's acceptable but still not great. Add another angler, livewells, and fuel and it's awful. I'm only getting 3000-3500 rpm until it finally get up on plane and then it really takes off from there. The two prop shops I have talked to offer no solutions and admit that this Ranger combo may be unpropable for both holeshot and top end speed. Looks like a choice of one or the other. At this point I have decided to prop for holeshot and sacrafice top end but I don't know what prop will work. Has anyone tried a 4 blade? Fury? Any suggestions?
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Doug, thanks for the consideration. We are all in the same boat, sic. ! If all goes well in the next few minutes I'll be headed to the lake to try some combos. No rain or storms predicted. QUESTION...What it the tallest pitch 3 blade prop ya'll can turn? I have tried the 27 Temp+, 27 TXP both worked by Mark ( I'm not mentioning the 26 Fury, 3-26 Rakers and RakerII I've tried)and they did a superb job up to 5850, I had more pedal but my engine was i day old. The TXP I'm sure would have run 80+ that day if I'd had the goobers to run it. HOWEVER the holeshot sucked and being as it was winter (12/12/07) I didn't feel like pulling up to a sand bar and swap out PVS plugs. I believe, and it's just my opinion, that if I can get one of the 3- 3 blades I have with me right now ( another 27 TXP worked, 28 Raker II, 30 ASX stock with PVS added) to turn 4000- to 4500 ( like my Bravo I does) with out blowing out, then I know they will give me the top end I want. As it stands now with the 28 BravoI I have that hasn't been worked, I think it could stand being pitched up to 29 and it will give me the magic # I'm looking for. That is 80 mph loaded with me only. My boat handles very well with a 4 blade but is faster with a 3 as I believe is the case with everyone else with a heavy boat. I have just bolted on a tricked out 27 Trophy that I will start off with and try to run them all.......talk to you this afternoon.......G
Re: 250 HO prop question (Garfish)
No rain but high winds and lots of traffic but did try the worked 27 Trophy...it rev to 3000 on the romp but would blow out on the rotation but I did overcome that by peddling. Well enough said.... however I was there so I ran it on up to 5800 and 71 mph and there was no sense in going on any more. Besides 71 was stretching the threshold of safety with the wind and wakes. The blade jumped out of the hole but soon as it started to break over it lost grip, I had all the pvs holes plugged and no ring. With a ring I could probably improved the holeshot... but why? for me there's not enough pitch for the top end. Will be pre- fishing next Thurs and will try the 28's and 30.
Re: 250 HO prop question (Garfish)
Garland you must be getting a lot of slip as i am running 25,26 's for the most part and gpsing over 81 with all my 3 blades. I turn my 26 fury 5950 at 82 everyday. but those are very low slip numbers.I turn a 27 tempest 5900 and saw over 83. i run a 26 B&B tempest 81, 26 raker2 82 and 25 raker 2 80. I have a B&B 26 bravo i turn 5900 at 76 with one person. If i could find a 3 blade to rev 3500-3800 with 2 people i could get out the hole fine but i cant get past 3000 at hit of throttle and thats where it needs the juice!
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Doug, I have read this thread and I think its time to get to the root cause of your and the other posters problem, I will ask you to understand I will need answers to questions you have already posted but the end result is to get your boat to plane.
I see you have an approx plane time of 8-10 seconds with the boat loaded?
The boat planes faster when the load is reduced?
Which prop seems to give you the best all round performance, keeping in mind you may need to give up a couple of MPH on top to reduce plane time?
What is the weather like were you are, hot humid or cool dry?
Lets start with these questions.
Re: 250 HO prop question (ELGIN)
Elgin
The best holeshot is with the 26 fury i can make 10 seconds with 2 people full fuel and full wells. Its is 6 seconds with 1 person and wells empty. the fury is the best all around prop day in and out on my boat.
the plane time is greatly reduced with any and all props.
the weather here is extremley hot and humid now and this problem is getting worse as we get more into summer. the holeshot when cool and dry in march was at best 8.5 seconds with 2 and 5.5 seconds with one.
Elgin the hole issue as i have dicussed with the brp rep and he sees it in his testing on Andys setup is we can get no hit of the throttle rpms. I can only rev 2800 with 2 people and 3100 with just one while loaded. that is with all the props except the bravo 1. it does rev to 45-4800 but is not actually moving much faster. If we could find a way to achieve 4-600 rpms at the hit of throttle i think all would be much better if not great. We have drilled props worked props and swapped props until i am running out of ideas. My fury has all 3 pvs holes wide open, a half inch hole to the right of each pvs hole wide open, and a 1/4 inch hole over the pvs hole to finally get it to the 3100 with one person. My 25 raker 2 i have self installed pvs holes. i drilled the holes to 3/4 inch then used a 1" bit for the counter sink.
I currently am working on a few other things and having some other ssytems testing done. If it wasnt for warranty issues i would swap and may swap the l/u off the 225 with the 186 unit just to eliminate an engine flaw. But i dont think so since it is not one isolated engine. And as this post goes it is becoming more evident of how many people and brands are having this issue. I hope we can find it soon as i didnt spend this much to be working on setup all the time i am ready to relax and fish but i need to be able to get up to do it. thanks for your help and interest!
Re: 250 HO prop question (DOUGMCGEEPUMAFTD)
Ok Doug,
With cool conditions one person Fury 26 and lowered weight the boat will plane in approx 6 (5.5) seconds, with a full load and two persons it will plane in 10 (8.5) seconds and this is the best in cool weather, correct?
I want to brake this down as we go, the boat in best conditions with the best all round prop looses 3.5 to 4 seconds when the weather warms and gets humid and the load is increased, correct?
If you do not carry the extra weight of the full live wells does the extra plane time reduce? Do you need to carry the extra weight due to fish in the livewell or is this just for testing?
