they tried that! taking fish from Dumas tx's and putting them in ponds to spawn and two of the ponds turned over! we lost hundreds of 4+ pounders! That is why when the fat guy in the big white truck shows up I personally will never give him a fish!

something definitely needs to be done about the pressure but it will be a hard row to hoe. unfortunately the only thing that will eliminate the pressure is for the fishing to go to heck and the tx will slow down.</td></tr></table>
JMHO - with the high flows that have been on the river the last few years, the tourney's have been alternating into the Dardanelle and Dumas pools. I think the fish in these areas have taken a pounding with all the activity while almost completely relieving the pressure off the other pools.
I think one of the biggest issues now is the backwaters silting in. I know the channel project will make the flow capacity of the river much higher - but what will this do to alleviate the siltation that's already taken place and are there plans to dredge outside the channel areas?

Re: AGFC Stocking Dardanelle? (pacafan)
Big Poppy- you guys always crack me up with that attitude.
No question the ponds turned over one year when there was a heavy cold rain.
No question that none of us want to see a bunch of fish killed.
But what are WE going to do to try to make the River better in a cost effective and short term way that we anglers can count on?
Wait on the Corps?
Lean on AGFC like we're helpless? Sure that gives us all something to complain about since we bare no responsibility in this plan but at some point sitting on your hands becomes the issue- lots more anglers than biologists!
Hundreds of four pounders?
Not hardly.
To portray that program as a failure because of a bad year is crazy-
You take 100 pairs of fish and they make nearly 200,000 fish. The average lifespan of a four pounder in the Arkansas River is a year or two. 10-15% of the fish you stock survive and do well(20,000). You do this program 7/10 years in a row. Why would you not participate? Heck those ponds were first put in in the friggin 1980's.
Ever seen how many keepers are in pool 2 when the pool gets sampled? How about just how many there are within 1 mile of the ramp? Yes even this year.
I have.
I think if you came on here and said something thoughtful like- "I think the lost fish from that year and their subsequent spawns in a natural habitat would have been more successful than this program" - I can entertain that- but given the brood stock lost since 2001(and their subsequent lost spawns) versus the production of the program, I think that's a losing position.
How about- lets get some bass from the hatchery instead? Well, well, well- where do you think those fish come from????? Ill give you a guess.....winner winner chicken dinner- an electrofishing adventure in the Arkansas River!!!
How about take them from somwhere else? Well we did that and you are going to lose some fish with a 2 hour transit from somewhere else and its expensive- diesel.
How bout more ponds elsewhere to offset the load on pool 2? Bring it!
How bout my favorite question-
What do you think oughta be done to make the river better and how would you like to implement it? Or do you think there's a problem or need at all?
I agree with yall above- pressure is a major issue and we all know it isnt going away. We cant change the flow in the river more than the Minimum flow agreements that have already been made.
#1 Habitat
#2 Stocking
#3 Monitoring (tournament fish care, tournament success, and sampling)
They are the only way to make it better.
Oh yeah and get involved in a constuctive way.

Oh one other thing- the 12' channel project- on hold until it can be paid for. There's just no money for projects from USACE other than expansion or maintenence of current projects. This 12' channel project brings with it many things- multiple backwaters reopened, jetties notched, all sorts of things to offset how bad the increased dredging will be. It'll be a mixed bag. Overall ya'll the Ar river is designed to become single file ditch with no backwater at all based the system of jetties that was agreed upon in the 1930's by the USACE following the flood of 1927.
Regarding coal pile I can say that Nick Mitchell at USACE Pine Bluff and Jeremey Risley have busted and are busting their tails to try to get this one done.
