I drop mine in a bucket of water.. Keeps the right amount of tension on the line and the spool will find the correct orientation...
No matter how I spool my spinning reels I get line twist so I do one thing to fix it. I tie a snap swivel to the line clip it on a tree branch in my front yard, open the bail and go for a walk. I walk until the spool is at the end. Then I reel in the line under tension. The twist in the line will be completely removed by the swivel. It works everytime.
One other thing......
Using wacky worms and dropshot rigs all day will put twist in your line because the act of laying line on a spinning reel causes the line to twist. If you don't believe me try spooling a garden hose around your hand and elbow. You will see the hose spin as it comes in. Wacky rigs and dropshots don't spin when you reel them in so they will create line twists everytime you reel them in. I deal with them in a number of ways:
Use a good line. I like 8lb XPS Fluorocarbon.
Use KVD line conditioner. (Don't use it in dusty environments because it will capture dust and dirt)
Close the bail with your hand.
Put tension in the line before you reel.
This doesn't eliminate line twist but ensures that it isn't as much of a problem. If you are on the water and have line twist problems, use the trolling trick of letting out the line as you are moving and then reel it in. Good luck and I hope this helps.
Yep, Reelmagic is flammable and KVDs isnt.
use braid with a 12ft topshot of fluro or mono, no line twist, your'll never go back

Thanks for all the good tips on the line. I just want to say this if you are not using the KVD line cond. and you are using Reel Magic you are wasting your money!! I have been using the KVD line cond. and this stuff is great! Spray you reels the night before you go fishing and your rod eyes and you will see what I mean. You will cast further and the coils are gone too. I will NOT be without it in my boat!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
Quick ?? Do you guys using braid w/ the flouro leader throw small CB's with the same set up?
Question??? Will this KVD also work on Bait Casting reels. I have used the Reel Magic but after reading these posts, I think I should change.
Another question. Is this KVD you all are talking about, the same as Kevin VanDam's line & lure conditioner?
Yes the KVD is the same as the Line and lure conditioner. By all means use it on your baitcasters. I use it all the time and think it is esp good on Flurocarbon lines spooled up on a baitcaster. Virtually eliminates any memory and leaves the line supple and free flowing. resulting in longer casts with much less effort.
Here is the method I use and I throw a lot of tubes so line twist is horrible. A bassmaster pro showed me this because I was bitchin about it one day on the dock.
Hold the spool in front of your spinning reel. (most reels today spin CC so we will go with that). Match the spool to the way the line is spooled onto the reel. The face of the spool that is facing you, goes down on the floor. Now here is the "TRICK". Use only the first (largest) line eye on the rod to run the line through.
I guarantee you will have smooth line when you cast. I spray the reel spool the night before I go fishing with KVD's stuff. Letting it dry is important.
When I start getting line twist during the day I do this. Cut off the lure, open the bail, lay the rod on the deck just behind you with the rod tip about 3' over the gunnel. (Make sure your knot is strong when you tied to the backing) Now just continue to fish and let the line spool off. When it has spooled off, just point the rod tip toward the back of the boat and reel in the line. (I go to the aft deck and watch the line come in) A faster way is to put the boat in gear and idle and hold the rod out away from the boat and let the line out. If you turn right slightly at the end of the line it wont get in the prop. Then go aft and reel in. I find this works better than tying off to a dock and stretching the line. Catching big fish all day will alleviate the twist for you, but hey, it's fishing.
I don't like swivels on tubes. So don't tell me to try it.

this is what I do. And I never will go back.
I use 10lb fireline with a 5ft 8lb flourcarbon leader tied with a 7 twist blood
knot. Once you use braid you will be hooked!!
How come no one here mentioned the 'original' Tangle Free line conditioner. Introduced at the 1987 World Trade show in Las Vegas. Invented by a school teacher here in TN. Still carry it, still works. I put line on the same way it goes on spool. Rod tip above spool which is on the floor. It takes me about 2 years to use up a bottle of this stuff. I won't spray anything near my reels, and this bottle has a flip top. NO WASTE.
why use a phone book when following the instructions above to completely eliminate twist from the get go.
when in doubt, wind on several yards, drop the tip, and check for twist...flip the line spool if twist is present...good to go.
just a note for the old farts. the mitchel 300 rotates opposite modern reels and needs the filler spool flipped in the opposite direction.
not a problem for me anymore...sold a box full of 300 reels, parts and spools on ebay along time ago
1. Bring line off the spool the same direction it goes on the reel.
2. ONLY use the first guide (largest) for the line...do not thread it through all guides
I start cranking and after 10 or so cranks I lower the rod tip. If I see the line start to twist I flip the spool over and crank 10 more times. And again lower the rod tip and repeat flipping the spool untill its full. Also every time after a cast I close the bail by hand. Turning the handel to close the bail starts to put a twist in the line. I have benn doing this for years and no more birds nests for me.
This works for me as well. Couldn't believe it took this long to mention. Use a low memory easy cast/extra limp line helps as well.
Just flip the line spool. On one side of the spool you will only have to crank 1-4 cranks then the line will start to twist. Flip the spool of line and start cranking watching for line twists. When it starts to look "twisty" flip the spool and repeat.
I have taught this technique at our local Community College in our introduction to fishing basics class. Amazing when people see it for the first time and realize it can be done with nothing else than the technique of putting it on.
