Watched this video and learned a thing or two. Creating SonarCharts is simple. Check it out!
How to create better SonarCharts
Why do the Navionic's roadbeds and foundations not display when I set Fish n' Chip(SonarCharts) on?
These are Texas lakes like Fork, Falcon, etc.
Some lakes show them while others don't. I'm sure there's a reasonible explanation for the inconsistency but I do know it's something they're working to get into all their maps despite the layer you are viewing.
Some maps will not show them on any layer. Lake Lanier for instance. Plenty of contours but no creek, river channels or road beds. Disappointing!!
Until I updated my chip, my chip did show the creek beds. Use to be a wide solid pale yellow line.
Alright guys I've got a question. I've started reading through the thread but it's huge and haven't quite found what I'm looking for so I'll go ahead and ask.
First off I have a Navionics Premium South card I purchased new last year. What is the best way to update it so that I can get Sonar Charts? Should I just do the download/update for $99 or purchase a Navionics Updates card? Is either option better than the other and why?
Also..... lets say I decide to contribute to Sonar Charts by sending in a log next week. I fish mostly on Pickwick and the winter draw down is about 6-8' below summer pool. Pickwick has a ton of structure and hazards lurking just beneath the surface during winter pool so I'm wondering how the Sonar Charts would account for winter draw down? It seems to me that if logs were uploaded at various times during different water levels there could be some problems with boaters not familiar with the lake. I may be completely over thinking this but wanted to ask to be sure.
To get Sonar Charts, you need Hotmaps Platinum or Navionics+
You can use your Premium card to verify you own Navionics products to get Navionics+ software for a reduced cost ($99 vs $179). You purchase the Navionics Update software. Register it, by downloading and installing Chart Installer from the Navionics web site.
After you register the Update card, you verify it with your Premium, and then put the Update card back in and it becomes the Navionics+ version. Registering your Premium card disables it from being used again for the same purpose. You don't loose the use of the card. You end up with two map cards.
From there you choose what locations to download to the blank card. The locations can be anywhere in the country and Canada. The limit of data on the card is 2GB. As you download locations, you will get a readout of the card capacity change.
Watch the Navionics+ video on their web site so you understand how to select the individual locations to download.
Additionally there is a new feature that allows you to completely clear the card and start over if you want.
Like all new purchases, you get one year of updates to do as many times as you want.
After you choose a particular location to download, you also choose Sonar Charts on the download panel.
Once you are registered, you can upload recordings to the Sonar Charts server from a memory card.
You don't have to do anything about pool levels, that will be figured in with your recordings since Navionics already has data for Pickwick. A particular GPS location already has the normal pool level. Your trail contains points that have the depth and location. That is what is used to create the contours.
You can view the current maps on the Navionics web site's Web App. It is updated daily "somewhere".
Thanks for the help. It's much appreciated! A local store has the Navionics Updates chip in stock so I'll swing by and pick one up tonight.
So if I'm understanding this correctly I do not have to worry about the water level and the effect it will have on the contours, correct? If that's the case I should be able to send in a sonar log for the same location at both winter and summer pools and it should be the same. As of now the contour lines are correct with full pool and I compensate for that mentally based on current levels.
Sorry for for all the questions..... I just like to be sure of what I'm getting into.
Need some help guys.
I have a Hot Maps Platinum South with freshest data I installed on 10/14 installed in a HDS7 Touch. I thought I would get the satellite overlay (google earth type image) on it but I don't. I have the photo overlay on full and transparency set to minimum. Do I not have a setting correct or is that not available with my set up?
You cannot update the Platinum features. What is on your card is all there will be on it.
Freshest Data updates the Nautical Charts, Community Edits, and Sonar Charts.
You have to set the Chart Aerial Overlay to Land or Land+Water, not "Hidden".
You have to use the Bird's Eye View to see the 3D View and you only get those for waters that are HD surveyed.
If you want the satellite overlay images, that would be what you have now--Navionics Hotmaps Platinum-- since that is the ONLY product that has the Satellite Overlay feature.
Only waters that are HD surveyed, will have a satellite image to overlay.
As far contour mapping for a particular lake, Navionics Hotmaps Platinum, Navionics Hotmaps Premium, and Navionics+ have the exact same map if updated the same day. It would be the same map that is shown on the Navionics web site's Web App. The Web App has the current maps and is updated daily.
Platinum offers satellite imagery as well as SonarCharts but only offers a preloaded region. (East, West, North, etc)
Navionics + doesn't offer satellite imagery but does of customizable downloading regardless of regions as well as SonarCharts.
Premium is same as Platinum except no satellite imagery and No SonarCharts.

Why doesn't Randleman Reservoir in NC show up on the Navionics WebApp? Been around since 2006 I think and not on it. I haven't checked my card yet.
It's probably because nobody has chart or log the reservoir; so an excellent opportunity to start logging next time you go fishing
Take a look on post 682
It's not on your card and the Web App has all the current maps. It was opened in 2010. That is when the Navionics Freshest Data program started and evidently there has been little or no requests to Navionics to include it in their data.
wallyandre has the solution
Thanks. Haven't fished it yet but was wondering. I'll have to take a trip out there.
I have a new Navionics Premium East card. Is this a normal picture? On the Lowrance Insight (built in) I can see Highways, etc. This just looks funny to me.
This card is in a HDS 7 Gen 2 and I have Navionics selected in "chart options"

You are zoom way too far
Navionics are marine maps so you won't see much of earth infos except on the Platinium
Yes it is unless you're driving you're boat on the highway:laugh:
Navionics is launching their new “SonarCharts for Garmin” product at the start of 2015. SonarCharts for Garmin is one foot contours of all our 18,000 Navionics lakes and coastal areas out to 80 feet. Beyond 80 feet in saltwater is 3 foot contours to 250 and 6 foot beyond that. This is meant to give more fishing and sailing/cruising detail on your Garmin chart plotter. We will like to give out some beta testing charts for free to get your opinion before we launch. We are offering a free chart to the first 20 people that send me a personal message. PM me your name, address, phone, email, and plotter type. We will send these to you as the regions are prepared. We know this additional level of detail for Garmin users will be something you will love!
These are the area currently being released, I will share other areas as they are released.
I've got s Navionics Platinum South card MSD/HMPT-S6 and I've had it since April of this year. I have updated it once with the chart installer and wanted to do it again. I unlock it and put it in my computer and I can't even sign in like I have before on the Nav site. Can't get anywhere on the site. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Well I did a little research and my 1 year was up in November. I cannot find where to renew on the website. Any help is appreciated.
Finally got it to work thru Internet Explorer...actually good until mid February. Wouldn't work in Google Chrome.
Mine does the same thing. It has to do with the "settings" in Chrome. You have to go in under "tools" and clear the cache, i.e., erase the cookies. Lowrances Insight Genisis is the same way sometimes.
Thanks Rebranger.... beat me to it. I thought it was interesting that it worked in Explorer but not Chrome. usually chrome works the best
Chrome works best for me. Safari does too.
The accuracy and efficiency is pretty amazing. Make new maps or enhance existing ones with Navionics SonarCharts LIVE!

Paul: I need your help. Bought boat w/ 2 HDS Gen 2 that are networked. Updated one w/ 3.5 software and the other will not upload. Console unit will update and bow will not. In the bow unit I have: 1. removed the Navionics card, 2. tried both card slots, 3. switched unit from bow to console, 4. reformatted SD card and redownloaded 3.5 update & 5 done multiple soft resets. This is tough on a old fella, what else can I do? Is there an internal setting that might keep it from updating? Can I have it update w/ the unit on (vs. hoping it starts to update when I turn it on)? Thanks, Bill
I'm not Paul but I will ask you if you unplug the ethernet cable when updating the units. 1st you should check the version of software on both unit:
Menu-Systmen-About and you should see the software version.
Andre: I updated the console unit to 3.5 from 2.1, The bow is still 2.1. I have not tried updating w/ the ether net cable unplugged. Should I only unplug this cable. This the small black screw lock cable on the far right looking from the back correct? Thank you in advance.
Looks like you are on a NMEA2000 network, so give a try with the black connector unplug. If you decide to buy a Ethernet cable (yellow end) you will be able to share one map on 2 units.
