E-TEC Oil

Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding which oil to use in a 2005 225HO E-TEC. I bought this motor brand new in April 2005 and have run XD-50 in it since the beginning. It has always been and still is programmed to run the XD-50. I just brought it back for the three year service (110hrs on motor at this point) and got a confusing response from the dealer. He said "you have to run the XD-100 even though its programmed to run the XD-50". The dealer was telling me the XD-100 program doesn't provide enough oil so they leave it set on the XD-50 but I have to run the XD-100. I've called a different local dealer and he said I would be fine to run the XD-50 on th XD-50 program. Now I'm confused with the 2 different stories and I hope someone can make sense of this for me. Thanks for the help in advance.

You can run the XD50 with no problem. but many recommend the XD100. I would do a decarb at least once a year when running the XD50 though..

What oil should I use?
Evinrude XD-100 synthetic is the best all around oil for an E-TEC. XD-50 semi-synthetic is the next best. If you want to use a different oil, it has to be TC-W3 certified. Other outboard manufacturer's oils are preferred over the aftermarket off-the-shelf oils.

Should I have the motor programmed for XD-100 oil?
The XD-100 reduced rate oil setting is for recreational use and the engine will consume less oil on most motors. You do have to continue using XD-100 oil continuously.

For high-performance or heavy duty commercial use, the TC-W3 setting is recommended.

Your dealer may be trying to sell you some xd100 too.

I guess you could call my 03 DI 's oil setting as the tcwIII setting,if I'm wrong Seahorse will check me. I'm not burning enough oil to make a difference to me considering the health of my engine being set to a reduced rating,PLUS my engine is being cleaned or kept clean in my casw , without decarb,additives etc............... I'll pay the extra for an oil that will do that, at least I'm not sucking the gas and oil that I used to with the carb engines!!! JMHO
