Replace head gaskets and thermostats ?
I have a 1997 Evinrude 200 OceanRunner model # E200TXEUA serial # G04307226. The motor is on a 22' center console used mainly in salt water. I bought it last year. Motor runs fine. I read where on a salt water motor that the thermostat & head gaskets should be replaced every year. Is this correct ? If not, when should they be replaced, or what should be replaced occasionally ?
Thanks,,

Depends on your boating practices, do you flush the motor when out of the salt? Or do you leave it in year around? Alot dictates how you take care of your motor.

Thanks for the reply, I do flush the motor after each saltwater trip. Not sure of previous owner(s). Previous owner(s) did not leave in the water, also appears to have lower hours on the motor. I had water pump replaced, the sleeve thing ? where the water pump turns in did not need to be replaced. So what do you think ? should I at least repalce the thermostat ?

We are in salt water and like to do water pump, thermo's every 3 years and head gaskets on your engine every 5 years. Saltaway is the best thing you can use when you flush the motor out.

johnrude, thanks for the info, where is the thermostat ? On my old Johnson 70, it was right above top cylinder, do repair manuals explain how to do this ?

Yep and Yep they are in the same spot on both heads. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

Make sure you take care when removing the plastic cap. I swear the saltwater glues these caps to the block. I dont know how many of these we break in a years time when its a engine we dont service each year. When you winterize it make sure you unscrew the cap and install grease on the threads every year. It will save you alot of hassle later on.
Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (johnrude)
Is a gasket sealer used on the thermostats or head gaskets ?

Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (ChampioNman)
You said "no" on gasket sealer, I read where seahorse said to use the BRP Gasket Sealer, is this for something other than the head gasket ?
Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (pappastratos)
Even with the head gasket saying use no sealer we use it on every head gasket.
Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (johnrude)
johnrude,, too bad you are not located in Alabama,,,
Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (pappastratos)
Your choice. I use no sealer on the head gaskets other than a light bead of Triple guard grease unless sealer is called for. But I also flush the deck and heads before I assemble them too http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif .
Re: Replace head gaskets and thermostats ? (ChampioNman)
I coated my gaskets on both sides with PERFECT SEAL sealing compound JV66B. Also, I ran my head bolts through a die to clean the threads and coated them with the sealing compound, torque to specs, ran the engine on muffs until it reached operating temp, allowed to cool overnight then re-torque, with only one or two head bolts moving slightly with the re-torque.

ChampioNman,, you said >>>>>>Your choice. I use no sealer on the head gaskets other than a light bead of Triple guard grease unless sealer is called for. But I also flush the deck and heads before I assemble them too >>>>>>>>
What do you mean by "flush the deck & heads" ? Also, "triple guard grease", on the head gaskets ?
Thanks,,
