Liability insurance requirement for Rallies & Tournaments......

"Guys.....I've given this a lot of thought and have decided that we WILL require that everyone have a minimum of $100,000. liability insurance for our rallies and tournaments.
I'm thinking that it will be a separate form as each "attendee" obviously wouldn't have to provide proof, only the boat owner.
It just doesn't make sense to not require it and have the majority with insurance and a handful that don't. What happens if someone without liability insurance causes an accident at a BBC event?
According to the poll that JerryT put up, something like 90% have liability insurance anyways.
I'm thinking we need to have them sign a form showing their insurance company, policy number & expiry date.
What I'm really protecting is everything that Shirley and I have, the BBC doesn't have all that much but we need to protect our "stuff"....."
A copy of the front page of the policy showing the name of the insurance company, liability coverage and expiration date must be kept in each boat and shown when requested.

I have the insurance so its not a big deal to me, but the last post I saw from Al on the G'ville Rally thread said to forget the insurance ?? I'm now confused (which is not an unusual thing). If Al has changed his mind he needs to get a post on the G'ville Rally board ASAP.
Did you ever ask about everyone signing a a waiver and a release of liability statement instead of having to bring your proof of insurance to each tournament? I assure you someone will show up without it. Can you use the waiver form as a backup if someone shows up without it?
Also, did you ever ask about signing the forms once a year instead of at every tournament?
Again, I already have the insurance but I can't guarantee I won't forget the proof before every tournament (I'm kind of forgetful about stuff).

Alan....Al did cancel the insurance requirement until he talked to his corporate attorneys to get a ruling. All this stuff is being discussed and decided on the Rally Coordinator's Forum. The quote from Al was copied from that forum. That is his latest decision.
Yes, I did ask about signing the waivers for a whole year and Al said that wouldn't work. Here's his reply....

Alan, I have asked Al to send me the new waiver and I haven't received it yet. I understand the new waiver will have a place to write in the name of your insurance company, amount of coverage and expiration date. But I must have a copy of the front page of everyone's insurance document that shows the company name, amount of coverage and expiration date for the BBC file.
When I receive the new waiver I will e-mail to everyone who has provided their e-mail address and they can be filled out and e-mailed back to me before each tourney. That should cut down on the paperwork the morning of the T. In fact, the copy of the insurance page can be e-mailed or faxed to me also.

Well I certainly understand that you guys have to protect yourself so that's the last you will hear from me on this but I do think it will greatly decrease the clubs growth potential.

I understand the rule for sure, It'll prolly keep me from bringing my boat to these tourneys, just not going to have that much ins on a old boat I'm fixing up, at least not for quite a while.

Alan.....I replied to your e-mail this morning.
I certainly hope that this insurance requirement doesn't affect the growth of any of the BBC Clubs. The main reason that this was put into place was to ensure that ALL of the attendees at a club tournament or BBC Rally had insurance. It's just not fair that some have it and some don't.....we'd have guys participating in tournaments if everyone wasn't required to have it.
I'm currently sourcing liability insurance for BBC for the rallies and hoping that it's not some outrageous price; hopefully I'll know next week.
The insurance company asked if we had waivers and also asked what we were requiring as far as liability insurance from the attendees.
As I've said before, I'm still very surprised that any would operate any boat (whether a 40 mph one or a 100 mph one) without liability insurance.

JUST 02 cents.
Those that do not have liability insurance should take just a few minutes and check out a couple of insurance companies rates. Liability insurance is very <U></U>in-expensive. The cost goes up with full coverage and addtional coverages. BUT Liability only, is affordable. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
