2001 optimax 225 nmea 2k?

I tried calling mercury and finding out if my motor was nmea 2k compatible. I gave my vin. (0t306720) and they said it was right on the very edge of being smart craft. They said I would have to take it to a dealer and see if it's the right ecm. He told me to look for a 10 pin adapter with purple cap. I looked and I think I found one but with a grey cap??? Not sure. I just really want my eng data to be on my graphs. Can anyone talk me through this so I do not have to take it to a dealer?
