This may not help but I just put one in my 1998 288 which is basically the same boat. The only thing I had to cut into was the plastic in the front storage compartment. You could always pull the front switch panel off stick a camera in their and snap a few pics to see. Thats what I did. Let me know if you have any questions they are easy to install took me about an hour that first cut is a horrible feeling though.

I put a recessed pedal in my 02 185 and it is the same deck as yours.
Put one in my 05' 285 last week and nothing in the way.
Wierd, my 06 must be a later model than yours. It has the recessed tray in there already. It doesn't appear to be aftermarket either.

It didn't come standard in '06, so your may have been a dealer add on that they did themselves or you may be correct that yours is a late model. you should be able to tell from your Hull ID # when it was manufactured.
