Switching from EFI engine to a carburated engine... would you do it?
I have been thinking of trading in my efi for a 3.3L 225 carburated engine(2001 Johnson). I realize it would be a lot more engine for my boat. I hear it's in mint condition and a top notch runner with very low hours. If my efi runs great, is there any disadvantage to running a carb. engine instead of the efi? A friend says I would be a fool to get rid of my fuel injected engine to run a carbed one. Just curious...

While I personally wouldnt put a new motor on my old boat, I have no problem running a carbureted motor. I feel that the extra gas I use, is cheaper than paying a shop to do all my work for me. The carbed motors are pretty simple and straight forward.

None of the Johnsons are 3.3 ltr. motors. Only the ficht and later Etec Evinrudes are 3.3's
What HP is your efi? What year. Who makes it? This all maters.
I wouldn't hestitate to switch if the HP was more or your motor is getting long in the tooth. Carb motors typically use a bit more fuel but other than that they are just as reliable and sometimes more so than an efi. Carbs are simple and can be worked on by the average Joe but efi needs service from a mechanic unless youare familiar with them.

Johnsons are not 3.3 liter engines.
If your engine is the Mercury 200 you have listed, you can do some mod's to it to perk it up. The 225 Johnny's are good running engines, but it won't start like an EFI in the cold.
Get the Brucato ECU, even his non tunable one is better then a stock one.

Maybe it's a 3.1 L. I swear he said it was a 3.3. I believe it's the 2001 motor listed by bworner a few threads down. My efi is a '98. Not sure of the hours. It runs good, and starts well. But this sounded like a pretty good deal. I cannot do any work myself, so either way, it's going to the shop for fixin'. It's a 2001 225 Johnson carbed 2 stroke. Must be a 3.1...
Re: Switching from EFI engine to a carburated engine.. ... (Derwood)
It is a 3.0 L non injected motor but you already knew that. You will have to install an new set of gauges, control box and oil tank. To accept the OMC motor. It isn't an HO, according to Brannon and then value of the motor is between $3-5K if non HO add $500 if it is an HO. With the exception of adding 25 hp I would stick with the Merc from a cost perspective. You won't gain a thing in the long run.

Mine starts better when its cold outside then it did in the summer time. One crank and it fires up.

I have never questioned the price on that deal, B. All I'm trying to do is find out (from others on this board,as you suggested) if the change from the efi to the carbed engine was a good decision to make... considering of course the very
hours, cleanliness, and overall condition of the engine. I am not questioning those things. If they were not of the highest quality, I wouldn't even be considering such a deal. However, longevity is important to me. I want something I can almost completely rely on for the next 6 years or so... with few failures ... Otherwise, I can keep what I have and deal with those few failures that will certainly arise over the next few years. That's all. Just trying to see if it's a wise decision, or one that would not pay off in the long run...

Derwood,
Is it an HO? Brannon never said. Young Mr. Worner needs to learn how to play nice on the BBC, IE, if he is going to sell a motor he needs to put it in the for sale pages. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
