looking to upgrade trolling motot on a jav 389. wondering what some of you other 389 owners have. Looking at the minn kota fortrex 80 in a 45 inch shaft, minn kota maxxum pro 80, minn kota maxxum 70, and motor guide.
concerned about about 80 thrust to much or 70 being to little
52 inch shaft to long
overall size of the troling motor when it is mounted,being to big on the boat.
On my old 94 I went from the Rude troller to a Minn Kota Maxxum 74 with a 42" shaft and it was perfect. I wouldn't go bigger unless you fish the river a lot or KY Lake where you can be fighting heavy current and/or big waves. You'll have to drill new holes for the mount, but they will fit just fine.

I put a maxxum Pro 80 on mine few years back and I love it!
if you're spending time on KY lake, you can't go too big. if you have the $$ go with the bigger one. i've got a maxxum 80, but i've been on a couple of fortrex's this last year and i wish i had one on my boat...
I have a 98 Javelin 409.... I put a MG Digital Pro Tour 70# on ours and it works great...works well in the wind as well.
i have an 81 lb motorguide on my 95 379. i predominantly fish the california delta and it seems to work fine for me.
nks everyone for your input.. I found a sweet deal on a fortrex 80 and have ordered it.
52" is too long unless you stay in severely rough water. The 70 will do well...the 80 will do better. 45" is max length.
Thanks, I found the Fortrex 80 with a 45 inch shaft on Ebay.. Now all I need is a 25 Tempest prop, 8 inch jackplate, and Hydro steering and the project will be complete.
On my R19...which is the same hull as a 389. I went from 56 lb OMC to a 82 Motor Guide Tour 45" shaft. It was buy far the best upgrade I have made to my boat. I would give up both my GPS units before I would part with 82 lbs of thrust.
I have a GPS speed of 3.65 mph on high with 82 lbs of thrust. Sometimes instead firing up the big motor to move 150 yards + or - I just kick the TM on full throttle.
