Need Help
Here recently my 2007 yamaha 3 cylinder 2 stroke 70 has been giving me issues. It started making a really loud banging metal sound when under pressure and in gear. the faster i go the louder and faster the sound is. in neutral the sound goes away. when trailered and i put the muffs on there is no sound either. this just started happeneing in the last two trips i was on. i will be draining the oil and pulling the lower unit but am asking if anyone has an idea on what it could be as this has never happened before.

Sounds like the lower unit is shot if it only does it in gear. Time to call Junior at pitstop.

My 225 merc did the same thing a few years ago, blown lower, hopefully yours is alot cheaper, 3 feet of fishing line did $2000 worth of damage

Lower unit. Don't run it any more or you risk punching a hole in housing and ruining it if you haven't already

sounds like a broken gear. went through this a couple weeks ago. drain the oil and look for small metal flake.
In my case, insurance covered the repair, i stated water intruded from a damaged seal from fishing line and caused the failure.

i pulled the lower unit today so far nothing i can tell i will be draining the oil tomorrow

Looks like i need a new lower, drained the oil and have metal shavings on the magnet as well as the oil looks like moon dust
