Basic info and manual wanted for 2000 175 hp Johnson

I just picked up a 2000 Javelin Renegade 19 with a 175 HP carb'd motor. No info/brochures/manual came with the boat at all. The boat hasn't been used in maybe as long as five years.

What kind of injection oil is currently recommended?
What is the range for WOT runs?
What is the required gas octane?
Is the current ethanol gas compatable with the gas tank which is made out of that whiteish plastic?
Can I buy, or get a scan of the original operating instructions?

I'm going to toss the existing injection oil, what else can be checked to make sure the injection is working correctly? (besides seeing if it seizes up)

Besides changing lower unit lube, any thing else I should do as a preventative measure?

Your best bet is to go down to Congamond and see Kurt Saunders, at Saunders Boat Livery, Congamond rd. Southwick. 569-9080. He can order you the manual, fill your oil needs, and help you out. Run XD-50 in it or any other good quality semi-synthetic in it. 5600 is about the max to spin it. 87 octane is the way to go. If all you have available is E-85 gas there is an additive to add to the tank. There is a test of the VRO but that should be done by a certified tech. You disconnect the oil hose and fill a marked tube on the Oil side of the VRO and watch the oil go down to verify the oiling. The parts and shop manuals are still available from BRP. Just bring the model # to them. J175XXXXX.

CM - I can't see an outboard lasting more then an hour on E-85. Can you tell us more about this additive? Ethonal is a death sentence for 2 strokes.

The product is called Star something I can't remember what it is but it is added to the tank. Also I agree with you on the E-85 but some places that is all you can get. I'm sure he can still get 87 octane which he should run. I myself wouldn't run the E-85.

fuel around here has 10% ethanol, no choice.
E85 is 85% ethanol, and is not something I would even consider putting in the motor - it probably wouldn't even run.

I had heard that any alcohol in the gas was bad for the tank. That's what I was asking about.....

E-85 is 85% gas 15% ethanol.

E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of 85 percent ethanol and just 15 percent gasoline. E85 is an alternative fuel as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. That's why it takes a special setup to run on. If it was 15% ethanol, it would run in any car or truck with almost no issues. GM is selling most of it's light trucks E85 compliant, and making a big deal out of it.
