I thought I had the same problem last winter. I installed a trim switch on the wheel and each time I would try it out the switch work but my gauge just stayed at the top. I was doing this in the garage. Once on the water it worked like a champ. The problem was I did not have enough room to lower my motor to ingauge the switch. Sorry I was long winded.
What motor?
VMax 150 here and there is a little plastic ring that mounts just behind the steering part on the motor that breaks. Once you find it there you can see the actual sensor thing and press it with your finger and see the gauge move. There is a metal one you can get to replace it for just a few bucks.
Bender, I have the same motor and that is exactly what is wrong. Where did you find the metal replacement part?
Any dealer can get it for you. Give Carol a call and she'll ship you one out. They're only a couple bucks.

It's a Trim Sender Cam priced at $2.46 and I have several in stock.
Get the $6.00 one made from steel and forget about replacing the plastic one ever again.
Does anyone have a pic of one of these things? My trim gauge stopped working and I can't seem to locate this "unit"
