1996 Johnson 150 Faststrike starting problems
First off 1996 Johnson 150 Fastsrtike
Mod #: J150GLEDB
S/N #: G 04098220
My outboard does not want to start. When I first crank it over it spins ok at first then slows down, like the battery is dead. The starter is pretty loud, but I am not sure if this is just the nature of the beast. I know the battery is fully charged, I cleaned the terminals and checked the conections everything seems good. A while back I was having problems and changed the power pack. This fixed most of the issues I was having. The motor ran great last time I was out, now it won't start. I also noticed that the tach was acting funny while I was cranking it over. The longer I cranked the engine the higher the tach regrestered. Also, occasionally the gauges will not work. The engine runs fine but the gauges don't work. Most of the time if I turn the engine off and back on the problem goes away. Could these two things be related? Where should I start looking?

General rule of thumb on the OIS systems pack gets changed so does the EET unless you have an analyzer. You need to set base timing for sure, But it also sounds like you have a VR/recticfier on its way out. Have all of these checked by a certified OMC tech to save you some $$$$.

Ok, I might sound a bit stupid but what does EET stand for?

Update:
It was the @#$@ battery! I was so sure that the battery was good I never even thought about checking it. Finally I came to my senses and swapped one of the trolling motor batterys over. I hit the starter, within 2 seconds she fired right up. So I spent what might be one of the last nice days of the year on the couch because of a bad battery. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/mad.gif

I was going to suggest the battery. Had the same thing happen years ago with a 70 Hp OMC. Replaced a starter, solenoid, etc and come to find out the battery was sick.
