Matt, I don't know much about your boat. But, Congrats on the purchase, good luck with it when you get back. Someone will get one here and answer your question.
Thanks for defending our country!!!!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif

Re: How do I make it faster? (bassindan)
I've not seen a 50 do 40 mph. 33 is about the norm.....prop swapping is the best way.....and ss props are not faster on the 50's.
Keep it light!

Matt -
I've got a 176 with a 75 on it. It does 48 with me alone and 42 to 45 with two other people on board. I don't think the 50 will get you to 40. But ... don't sweat it. If you wanted to go fast, you wouldn't have bought this boat. It's for fishing, not doing 75 mph. You'll love it though ... great boat and will be perfect as your first one. Keep your loads light, don't fill the fuel tank all the way, and make sure your passengers are seated to keep the boat level ... all of this will aid in making it go a little faster.
Re: How do I make it faster? (norcal bass)
not 40 but i have gottin 38.3 at 5800 tourny load with a 50 horse 2 stroke and a worked 3 blade ss prop.
do your self a favor get rid of the tin prop first thing. i am impressed buy the performance of the 50 moters on a heavier boat -176 tx-
of course my lil stratos is NOT a 176tx. it is much lighter-no carpet, no back deck- and a javlin slick hull..
