Help with speed on a SX180
After 4 long months of waiting, I got my SX180 w/90 out for break in. Once I was allowed to give it full throttle I couldn't get it to tach more that 4800 and I had 39 on the GPS. That was at full trim also. I would think I should be maxing out at around 5300 and around 45mph. What could be the problem. Not my 1st boat but the 1st one that didn't hit its max RPM from the start. It has a stainless 19" prop. Thanks.
Todd

It took a little while before the 115 on my SX 180 would go over 5000 rpm. I've got about fifteen hours on it now and it hits 5500 rpm. I haven't installed a gps yet, but the speedo shows 48 mph loaded down with two people and a full tank of fuel.

Was your speed down at first also?
Re: Help with speed on a SX180 (toddfore)
Yes, at first I was only seeing about 44 on the speedo.
FYI, to max it out, I have to trim it out almost all the way. When the guage shows about 3/4 max trim, is when i feel the boat lift and pick up a little speed and mph. About 7/8 max trim seems to be the sweet spot.
Re: Help with speed on a SX180 (The Old Man)
I'm getting 52 loaded with just me. Turning a 19K prop 6000+ rpm, no more trim left, but drop it a bump for best bite. Motor set in the 2nd hole from the top (came rigged in the 3rd hole but dropped it down one due to blowout) I've been wanting to try a 21 or 22, as I have plenty of room on holeshot.

You must have the 2 stroke 115 to get this thing over 50. Mine is the 4 stroke 115 and best I have seen is just over 47mph with a somewhat light load. As far as the RPM question, you should get up near the 5800 mark.
BTW, the MPH guage on the boat is only a guide. If you are talking about true speeds, you need GPS speed.
Re: Help with speed on a SX180 (MisterE)
i run 48.3 gps loaded with just me in mine full load and tank and livewells but i have a 115
Re: Help with speed on a SX180 (Skeeter Boy 181)
mine is a 4 stroke, is GPS, and I'm a fat boy with a LOT of plastics...
Re: Help with speed on a SX180 (toddfore)
My F115 has a 19Â prop, stainless from the dealer. The best speed I have obtained according to my Lowrance LMS 480 is 47 mphÂ
maybe could have been more if my wife didnÂt intervene. General speed around 44-45 mph with a fishing buddy with live wells full.
