I too kicked this idea around for a few months due to the original owner of my boat took the rod tubes out but left the rod butt organizer in. After finding out that the original tube rack for my boat didn't hold enough rods for my tastes and custom rod racks were not going to give me evough either, I went with another idea ......
Stick Jackets. And I love them. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif I can easily get 20 rods in my locker now .... AND grab the bottom rod in the pile and easily pull it out without it hanging on anything. If you're worried about scuffing your reels you can always get the reel covers.
a buddy of mine gave me some tubes from a golf bag. they work great. they are a little bit smaller than the ones that are already in the boat. i was able to add another 6 more tubes in mine.
I made a custom 2 propalyne cutting boards and golf tubes, they look great and work great.
im going with rod socks....that way in travel i can put both poles, seats, big ass net,in my rod lockers also...fits nicely and stays the way you placed it!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

I use rod socks, my daughter made them, grey for short sticks, black for long. I also had them all embroidered with the Skeeter logo. They turned out great and I know they are mine.
I pulled the tubes in favor of the socks. Worst investment I made in the boat was rod tubes. (2004 SX190). Rods stuck in the tubes, eyes bent... I will sell you the tubes...

seems like a great alternative so you can fit more rods, but don't your reels take a beating? I'd like to do it, but I'm kind of anal about boat/reel rash
