I've got a friends '79 70HP Evinrude 70973R that has a tilt trim that will go up but not down. I tried to look up the parts breakdown but the tilt trim is not listed. Perhaps it was added but it does look to be factory. Anyone have a suggestion on trouble shooting this?

Is there another site or forum that anyone knows of where i could get a breakdown on the tilt trim unit for this motors?

If you go to the BRP web site and look in the parts catalog under OB accesories you will find it there. That was probably a kit #0173613. Let me know if you cannot find it.

I just had this happen to my 85 115hp about a month ago. The relays were the first thing I had problems with in 94 when I bought my boat so that was the first thing i checked. But since both relays were working I checked the fluid and found it was very low. I filled the fluid back up bled it out and now it is working fine. I believe mine is factory installed but there are several factors that you need to check. Make sure the button that controls the down trim has good contact, reverse the wiring at the button. Make sure the relay terminals are clean and have a good connection. There should be a clicking noise if the relay is working correctly. Is there a switch at the bow, does it go down when you use that switch. Abd of course with the age, there is always a chance of a broken wire. My boat is a 79 and I have had all of the above happen, just a few things to check for.
