Will a bad stator cause acceleration problems?
I have a 1992 Johnson 115 Pro Series Outboard, Mod #TJ115TLEND, pushing a 1992 Nitro 180. Top end on the boat seems to be ok, I am getting right at 45 mph at 5200rpm. The problem is, getting out of the hole is poor at best. Give the motor full thottle and she falls on her face and slowly crepes up in rpm. Once it reaches around 3500 rpm, the motor takes off like a bat outta hell, but it takes forever to get to that point. The prop is the correct size and pitch, 13.5/19 pitch. The gas is clean and the VRO is pumping oil. Where could my problem be? I have had a few people mention the stator could be bad, is this a possibility? If so, how?
Any suggestions or ideas? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif

Make sure the timer base is moving when you advance the throttle. The timer base & sensor assy is located under the flywheel but if you advance the throttle with the engine cover off you can see the linkage and timer base move. Sometimes the linkage can get sticky and it does not move initially but will creep forward with the vibration of the engine.
Your RPM should be about 5500 with a light load if your propped right. Youre not bad low but a little.
You might also try pushing in on the key while accelerating to see if that has a positive effect. If it does then your carbs need to be cleaned/rebuilt.
If none of that helps you need to find a good Evinrude/Johnson tech. It should be easy to resolve if it is easy to duplicate your complaint.
