Prop size
Right now I'm running a 26 pitch raker on my 225 E-tech. on a Z-20 Ranger. The hole shot isn't all that great and the top end is gps speed of 66 to 68 mph. I've seen other engines on boats about the same size as mine and they are running a 24 Prop. I'm wondering if I'm over proped. The RPM at top speed is right at 5300 to 5500. I understand Ranger is not the fastest boat on the water but thought I should be running in the 70s somewhere.

Re: Prop size (LF Crim)
Is the prop a Raker II or original OMC Raker? The older OMC Rakers do not have much lift and need cup added to even come close to running right on a Ranger.
I run a 27P Tempest on my Z21/225 ETEC HO, turn anwhere between 55-5600 rpm's in the heat of summer and 68 GPS with two 1/2 tanks of fuel and my partner. In cooler weather I have ran 5800 RPM at 71 GPS plus.
I also have a Turbo TXP 26P, has better holeshot and better lift than the Tempest, but it has been slightly worked by DAH and the Tempest is stock. Both run about the same R's and Speed.
You should run as fast or faster than my Z21, but have also heard the 20' will not run as fast as a 21' due to the seat being pushed forward.
Your elevation may be killing HP on your motor as well.
Is your ETEC the HO or standard 225 ETEC? The HO is about 25 horses more than the standard 225 ETEC as well, the HO is actually a 250 with 225 HO stickers.

Re: Prop size (Z21ROD)
Thanks for you reply, the prop. I have is a raker ll and the engine is an 225 HO I'm being told that the red line RPM is 5800 on the 2005 225 e-tec HO. is that correct? I'm in LV. Nevada and the elevation shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Prop size (LF Crim)
Do you have a jackplate?? Might also try another prop or have that one looked at to make sure you don't have one blade out of balance and pitch.

Re: Prop size (LF Crim)
The over rev protection (RPM limiter) is set higher than 5800 but that is all you should turn the engine unless you want to use a lot of oil for no reason.
A 24 pitch Raker would probably pick you up around 400-500 rpm. You will turn a few more RPM, have a better holeshot and run about the same speed as you do now.

Re: Prop size (Z21ROD)
Yes I do have a 10: jack plate put on at the Ranger plant. I am a little sluggish coming out of the hole do you know if 66 to 68 is about normal for most Z20 boats with my set up?

Re: Prop size (LF Crim)
Pretty close. Try the 24 and see what your prop height is at. The Ranger crowd would know better. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
