My 06 188 (175 Yamaha) has 165 hours with motor warranty expiring in March. I had thought about a new Z518 but I don't gain alot except for the 200hp motor.
So my thought is to keep the 06 (in perfect shape) and do some upgrades:
HDS Gen 2's console and bow
Hot foot
jackplate
Fortrex 80 (not a must as long as current Maxxum 70 is good).
Any other suggestions????
I would keep the 188 and buy some upgrades. The Z518 doesn't really give you anything extra, except the bigger motor. I think the 188 runs fine with the 175hp.
I would keep the current Minn Kota, and add the SI transducer for the Lowrances to the list. Also, get the dual blinker trim switches for the jackplate and motor trim.
I have the same boat (2008 model) as you. Definatey add the hot foot. Have you thought about adding a deck extension? I'm looking into adding one on mine.
How much more MPH do you look to add with the jackplate?
Harris, I already added the deck extension.....2nd best thing I ever added, after the trailer step.

Probably only 3-4 mph more
I guess you would compare the value of 3-4 extra MPH vs. the additional cost. Lanier can get rough (I lived in Atl for 10 yrs), do you think it's worth it?
If u fish a lot of of shore then upgrade to the 4000 Lowrance antennia on both ends of the boat, u will love that upgrade for sure. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
I only fish Lanier from Sept-Jan (including yesterday). From Mar - Nov I am also on Gville once per month and it can get rough too. Not sure it's worth it either but I think it would also help hole shot.
Rodney I would definitely get the 4000 module but had not considered front AND rear.

J Mac, no I just posted this morning. I never thought I needed a jackplate but I would certainly get one on a new boat. Since I have decided to keep my boat I just thought I would go ahead and try to max out the performance. If I get one it will be manual I'm sure due to cost. If I will need longer cables etc I might opt not to do it.
just for info you can get an 8 inch with out new cables .

Hey Warren, I really like my 188 even though I've only had it for a couple of months now. I was not going to put a jackplate on mine but, I think I've changed my mind. Not just to increase the speed but, to improve the ride, handling, and bow lift. I just have a 150 Optimax on mine and it runs great and is very easy on fuel and oil but, I've decided it needs a jackplate. The last couple of times I've had it out the water has been a little rough (2 foot chops) and I've been told by a couple of guys that a jackplate would help the ride in rough water. It makes sense by adding another 6 to 8 inches to the overall length.
Hi Glenn, are you going with a manual or hydraulic? I am leaning towards manual due to cost and because I really don't fish ultra shallow water. I would rather use that money on my new graphs.

Hmmm, actually I have thought about it but again I typically fish deeper water. It would come in handy in a few places at Guntersville.
I'm going with a manual and probably a slidemaster. I have no need for a hydraulic. Most of our lakes are deep. I'll probably get Mark to work my prop after I get the plate on and get him some numbers or try one of his props. I still think I made a great choice when I decided to down size. I honestly can't believe how easy this 150 is on fuel and oil. I'm use to filling up after every trip but, not anymore.
Hey Warren, I put a "8 manual on mine. Since you don't fish shallow, you won't need to adjust as you go. When I adjusted the motor to where it should be, it raised it up anyways, so being low isn't a problem. And cost was a issue, you can pick up a great one for the $300.00 range.
