Galling on back of prop and thrust washer

2014 Merc 4S 90 HP Ser #2B094252

Did a lube, oil and filter change on the Merc this weekend. When I pulled the prop, I was greeted with what you see below. There was very little lube on the shaft.

Is this considered to be normal, or should I raise the roof with the dealer that installed. Motor has 15-18 hrs on it.

When the prop is installed and properly torqued to book figures, I still have about 1/8 movement on the shaft. Again.. Is this normal?

What PROP is that?

Normally recommend a Flo-Torq III hub kit, and a Flo-Torq equipped MERCURY propeller (appears from the pictures you have neither).

Solas. I think they have their own hub system.

Prop not properly torqued, more than likely. Appears it's been loose between the prop and the thrust washer.

Probably ok if properly reinstalled, but might not be a bad idea to have the dealer inspect it, "hands-on".

Thanks Don! You are way closer than the dealer up in NC.. I'm just down the road from you over in Easley...

Dealer said they are sending me the "Proper" Mercury washers.. We shall see.. I will measure them when it shows up.

I'm still not done with them...

If your so close run it over by him so it can be inspected :thumb up2:

I personally would be replacing that thrust washer with a brass one....

Don - I think it is brass... The dealer is sending a complete new hub kit and we will see where that leads...

I've sent the info across the pond to Solas to have them take a look...

That's definitely not a brass thrust washer- appears to be stainless.

Well... we have the answers.

Talking directly to Solas this morning, a lot of information was brought to light.

No matter how you try... You can not use a Yamaha part number prop that uses the pressed in hubs on the Mercury motors. Yes... It will fit, but you wind up with the damage as I have documented. There are physical differences on the inner barrel.

The dealer sent me a new install kit, and it is the proper one if you use a Solas Mercury part numbered prop.

After another discussion with the dealer, a New Solas with the correct part number will be shipped.

I kind of got a chuckle out of the Solas response.. "Why do you think we have different part numbers? Because their is a reason"... :roll:

Well that's a good start... pity you didn't end up with a suitable prop that uses the Flo-Torq Hub System (unfortunately, Solas has their own (different) hub systems).

. . . and good you caught it before there was any more damage.
