73 50hp Evinrude Lower Unit Oil
On my 73 50hp Evinrude with Hydro Elec Drive Lower Unit I see that the Penzoil website recomends ATF. I know that unlike the earlier elec shift lower units that were magnetic that these later drives were elect/hydraulic in which the solonoids engage hydro pressure to shift. Would these lower units use the same OMC Type C Lube as the others? Ya think ATF Would do the job as nobody close by has Type C?
Thanks Eddie

The factory has not called that particular gear oil Type C in many many years. It is Premium Blend.
If you can't find it at a dealer, marine stores may have Lubrimatic brand that says it is the same as Type C, for electric shift and hydraulic shift motors. Your outboard is technically a hydraulically assisted mechanical shift, but it takes the same lube.

Thanks Seahorse, I'll check it out. Still curious about the ATF thing though. Anybody???? Not sure if I would go that route anyway but I had never heard
of substituting ATF. Never Know, might need to one day in a pinch http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/glasses.gif
Re: 73 50hp Evinrude Lower Unit Oil (nxs454)
Years back, a lot of years back, there was a bulletin that some small motors were sent out of the factory with ATF in them as there was a shortage of the old Type C back then. They did not use ATF in the large motors.
