Moved from KS to Colorado last year. My 198 Champ has been in storage for the last year while we built a house so I finally got to put it on a lake in Ridgway, CO this week. Elevation is above 5000 ft. My hole shot was awful. Talked to local Merc service dealer and he suggested dropping to 21p prop from my 26p Merc. That seems like a pretty drastic change. Any guidance on hat prop to use? I may run on lakes as high as 7000' but also want to run on lake Powell which is about 3700.

I'm not sure what pitch you will need for either elevation but I do know you will need at least 2 props, 1 for high elevation and another for lower elevation. Most of the rigs down here (Elephant Butte NM, 4350 ft elev.) with 225 hp motors seem to run 23/24 pitch props depending on rig. I had a friend with a 20 ft champ/225efi that ran a 23 powertec tro4, I also had a 20 ft cobra that ran a 23 tro4 or trophy (they both had 1.75 gears). Load at elevation also plays a big part of prop size. With my current rig I currently run fishing solo with a 30p and team with a 28p at 4350 ft elev. Hhe higher in elevation you go the less hp your motor will make. Good luck with your situation as most on here havent had the elevation to deal with.
lw, you might want to drop into the Colorado Bass Club forum here on BBC. The guys there might be able to give you some good info on set up as they also run the waters you will be running.
