repower question

I'm looking into re-powering my 202 next year, My idea is either Mercury 225 proxs
or a 225 Yamaha sho
I know that a few of you guys have dropped new motors on this proven hull and would like to hear some input on your thoughts.
Where I fish there are very strict speed laws so there not much use for trying to break the speed record on my home lake, I'm looking for something that well last give me good fuel mileage and not break the bank on having it serviced.
I've had good luck with my black motor in the last 14 years but the new Yamaha sho 4 stroke is just as heavy, 505 and I'd get to dump the oil reservoir and could toss in that 4th battery and go 36 volt.
But theres the cost factor to consider.

Don't forget the added cost of new controls if you switch brands..

Lea makes a excellent point. I just repowered my Champion and went from a Evinrude to a Merc and had to buy new controls and I also went with the new gauges plus new Hydraulec steering and it costs me thousands extra. It was well worth it since I get triple plus the mileage and piece of mind. You really need to weigh all of it. I could have bought a great newer boat with a bigger engine for what I have put in my Champion but I just do not think I will find a better boat.

True Guys, controls are a consideration, even if I got a Merc. I'd still want to upgrade my Commander 3000 control and add a Jack plate.
Even weighing in on a "new" used boat, I'd love to have a single console, I guide and that would help big time, with that said, my boat gets worked over buy clients and me, we dip shad for bait when available and have to get in some skinny water.
I'm just looking for something thats going to be dependable and if I run pumps and electronics all day without the big motor running that much, to have a larger alternator than the 40 amp stator thats on the 200 efi, plus with the 3 star Carb rating in Calif. and a possible ban on some reservoirs of 2 stokes I have to be ready for that.

I just put a 250 XS on my 202 a few months ago. Its incredible. I switched from omc to merc, so I had to do new controls. I also went with new gauges, hydraulic steering, and a new jack plate.

The track record and availability of service of the Mercury speaks for itself. I purchased all brands of engines for the navy,,,, each engine offers features which you might prefer. My personal boats(5) have always had Mercury and I've had excellent service. The PRO XS 250 is awesome on my 203,,the mpg @ 44-47 mph has been 5.4 mpg with a top end of 74mph.
I'm know that many brands are excellent and the Yamy four stroke is awesome ,,,but the numbers tell me Mercury. What ever you decide

Tough call. If you want awesome as mileage then the merc is the answer. I have a hpdi and the opti beats it hands down for mileage. The sho is tempting and I will consider one in the Spring.
