Re: Handling bass.... (Lea)
I can understand holding real big fish by the mouth will injure the jaw, but can you show me somewhere that it's been studied that holding average size fish by the jaw is damaging?
I contend that most hook sets are more damaging to a fish's jaw than holding them by it, and I know I've caught hundreds of fish with plenty of holes in the lips from hooksets. I think they are a lot tougher than we give credit for. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif
Re: Handling bass.... (Lea)
I see a thread about keeping them out of the water to long but nothing about handling by the jaw. Can you pinpoint which thread your refrencing Lea? I'm willing to change my view if i can get enough info.
Re: Handling bass.... (dstacey)
I will try to find the info. I have read this in more than one place, so am sure it is accurate. As far as small bass, not sure, but did read holding them so jaw is bent down is not good on any size. I read somewhere, that it will dislocate the jaw. I would rather err on the side of caution, regardless of fish size, tho. Better too cautious than not cautious enough. It's not like it takes any extra time or effort.
Re: Handling bass.... (Lea)
I think the biggest problem comes from those who bend their wrists back underneath the jaw. This puts all the fish's weight on the jaw. Most of us hold the fish straight up and down or support the fish's tail with our other hand and don't put the weight on the jaw. Just my humble opinion.

It's too bad the pro's don't get that. They get up on the weigh in stand, grab their two biggest fish, hold them up high, and bend their wrists supporting all the fish's weight by the jaw joint. Dumb http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif ,

Lea: It's just like a lot of things, non believer, and will doubt anything that has to do with changing behavior. I for one will take heed to the advice and go on. If this means helping the fish survive or not , worth a try. By the way thanks for the info. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

It's ok to ask questions Larry. It's an excellent way to learn something new... as I suggested.

as you can see from the picture below it's not even a behavior that I need to change. And I didn't even have to be told that it may or may not save a fish for me to act this way.

No one was even suggesting you were not handling fish correctly....it was just general information put out there for those who were not aware. Nice fish, BTW http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

It's been a little boring in here since Champion has been swept under the rug and we can't argue with the stratos guys about how much better our hull is than theirs. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/stirthepot.gif
