1996 21' Champion Setup

I'm posting this for a friend, and thank you all in advance. Any and all help is totally appreciated.

The Rig:

1997 Champion 21'er
1996 Yamaha ProV 200
6" Jackplate
25P Tempest
No Water PSI Guage (YIKES!!!)

Empty, he got 70mph GPS, but didn't note the RPM. However, over the weekend, during a tournament, fully loaded, full tank, full wells, both men in the boat weighing in the 180-210lb range, he was able to bang out 65mph @ 5600rpm GPS.

Since I don't own a Champion, I have no idea what this boat is capable of, or what RPM he should be seeing @ WOT.

Can this boat get more top end, or is it pretty much dialed up right?

Hmmm perhaps it's a 202? I don't recall any 21' Champs, unless there was a 21' CC boat. And with the bay boats, I don't think 70 is realistic. Just sayin http://www.bassfishingworld.com/ecomotions/confused.gif

Just came off LOZ about 2 hours ago in my '96 202/200EFI with a 25M Yamaha prop, no jackplate, one inch high off transome. Tourny load, full of fuel (31 gallons) and two people = 65GPS. Livewells Empty = 65GPS. Seats in = 65GPS,
Seats out = 65 GPS, Just driver = 66GPS. RPMs right at 5800

Previous testing:

Two guys and 1/2 tank fuel and minimal gear = 67 GPS.

Down current on Missouri River in cold azz temps, two guys, 1/2 fuel minimal gear = 70.04 GPS. (trophy prop)

It also likes a 25p Trophy almost equally as well with a slightly better hole shot. RPMS right at 5800-5900 ish.

I have never run it totaly empty with just a splash of fuel. I truly love my 202/200EFI but I dream of a 225 or 250 with a rapid jack. a 202/200 (take your pick of a stock motor) is a solid mid 60's boat with a tourny load. You could get another 1-2 mph if you tinker but I'm happy and satisfied, until she blows, then its hotrod time.

IF you have hydraulic steering the 8" plate might get you another mph or two. If not, you won't be able to use it without replacing steering cables.

That boat really runs best with a high rake 3 blade prop like your M yamaha, tempest, or T1 or clone.

It is an amazing hull in that it still runs dang good with a 4 blade, but it just isn't best.

With a deuce it's a 65 mph ready to fish rig.

No complaints from me.

Yeah, that homemade peach cobbler is dang good, until you drop that glob of homemade ice cream on top too...

Or maybe a 201? I forget which models were in which years. I need to check brochures for 96/97 (Title of post says 96, text says 97). I was not going to fuss about the length.. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif Hopefully, the owner has paperwork with model/specs.

At any rate, 70 does seem awfully optimistic.

As I said, the 70mph run was a GPS readout, and I've advised my friend to leave the setup alone. I think swapping to the 8" plate isn't really gonna give him much gain, if any at all. Sounds like the boat is well-dialed.

He is, however, wanting to upgrade to a 250. He'll go with another Yammie, I'm sure, but I bet that boat will really haul the mail with it.

Last year for the 201 was 94. 204 came out in 93, but was gone in 95 (I think) after the 202 came out. 202 was 95 & up through 2000(?)

Those speeds with a deuce are going to come from a 202.

I'd leave it the heck alone...UNLESS I wanted to call Wayne at Hydro Tec and wake that rice burner up to it's potential....
