5th wheel tires
I know these tire threads have been beaten to death and Bamaman has been diligent in answering them as well as I have on some. I replaced all 4 of my GY Marathon POS tires on my tri-toon trailer with Kumho 857's, never looked back. So now for this RV/Camper site I see more tire questions so hopefully the info I researched and found might help a few. I 've found that probably 99% ..... ok, 100% of the ST trailers tires are JUNK chit made in China, as Bamaman keeps preaching to those asking the questions. The larger 235/80/16 tires are no different .......... JUNK!! PLEASE!! whatever you do, spend the money on better heavy duty tires so you don't end up on the side of the road with your wheel well and wiring ripped to pieces or worse yet have an accident due to faulty, cheaply made tires, just isn't worth it.
Why the mfg's keep installing them on new rigs is beyond me, if they would just charge a little extra and install Maxxis 8008's or Kumho 857's on the smaller tow be-hinds would keep their customers happy. Now getting to the point about the larger 5th wheel rigs, we bought a new 34' Montana Mountaineer 295 RK last year. I had it towed out to Grand Junction, Co. and we picked it up from there for the 330 mile trip home to So. Utah. As one might expect the rig came with those "wonderful" GY Marathons, I had my fingers crossed the entire 330 miles home but we made it.
I had been doing a lot of looking and reading on several RV forums about the GY G614 (I think) which is rated 3750 lbs @ 110 psi. These tires cost around $400 each and a few members on these forums had been having some delam problems with some of them. I kept reading and finally a guy mentioned the Sailun S637 trailer tire, YES these are also made in China but Sailun is well known in the trucking industry for good tires. I googled these tires and didn't find one negative remark about them, they are an 85 series tire which means they are about 3/4" taller than the 80. They're also rated 3750 lbs @ 110 psi so you need the appropriate wheel to use them, luckily my wheels were the right type. I found a tire dealer on ebay that goes by "rustybore" selling this tire for $198 FREE shipping so I quickly bought 4 of them. The dealer swore by these tires and told me how heavy and well built they were. What a surprise when I had the tires changed, The Marathon tire weighed 37 lbs. and the Sailun weighed 62 lbs. I swear the sidewall is an inch or more thick.
Man I'm long winded, anyway for you guys looking for a tire for a larger 5th wheel take a look at the Sailun S637 tire. The tire does say use on a 6.5" wheel but most RV's run 6" wheels and I was assured by several dealers that it wouldn't be an issue, so far it hasn't ........ and no, I am in no way affiliated with Sailun or "Rustybore", just want to pass on the info I have found.Attachment 184565 sorry, this pic is the Marathon.
