Put 30 gal of gas in my 2009 190 CX and my gas guage reads just over 3/4 full. When I got to the lake there was gas all down the side of the boat and even on the trailer fenders.
Changed the seal in the gas cap to an o-ring and that only slowed down the overflow. Last year I had no such problem, but I never filled the 50 gal tank over 1/2.
Anyone got any suggestions, since my dealer is no more.
Anyone??
Champion didn't make the gas cap. Ge tthe brand name off of it and google it, try iboats and other such places, you will find it. I had to change the filler on my 06 last year, it was not fun.
I have the same issue on my 2005 Champ 198. I don't normally fill the tank completely until storage time in winter. I just recently used the boat after winter storage and ran 1/4 tank of gas out and the problem seems to have dissappeared. Keep me informed on the resolution.
The tank vents out of that cap also, as opposed to the separate vent that you saw on prior models. So if you fill it chock full to the brim, you are going to get spills out of the vent until the fuel level goes down some. The problem is that you can't see the tank and cut off the fuel a little early. I listen very carefullly now and when I hear it getting full I shut off the pump, it still is very full but the filler hose is empty.
The gas cap is made by Perko and there are two that look like mine according to their web site. One has a straight vent and the other has an angled vent. I think I would have to remove the whole assembly to change it since the cap is hinged to the actual outlet. Then I'm not sure how the gas and vent lines are connected to the cap and where the vent goes after the cap (back to the tank??).
The only way to accurately set the Merc Smart gauge gas gauge is by filling the tank by quarters - the other method doesn't work well with a non-rectangular tank, so I think I'll just take your advice and not fill my tank past 1/2 full on the guage and try to listen when filling.

The filler is connected to the tank by two hoses, one large fuel hose and one small vent hose, the hoses are clamped to the filler. On my boat I had to remove the seats and the aluminum seat base then lay on the exposed fuel tank and reach up under the gunwale to get to the clamps. As I said it was not fun. But the hinged cap broke off mine and I had no choice.

all of them vent to atmosphere..
when you fill em up the gas will expand and overflow out of the vent if the weather cause temp increase ..( or trailering )
sounds like you just need to calibrate your gas guage ..
I set mine to read as accurate as I can when less than 1/4 tank
this is done by known quanity of gas on board ..
and with boat in the water..(sits different on trailer )
then remove sender from tank , bend the arm on the sender re-install in tank .
check reading on guage ..) may require several times ( bending the arm _
Once it is right , welcome to the world of actually knowing how much gas you have on board..
I really dont care if full is accurate...
