E.M.M. problems

I was just bragging on this motor the other day on the triton board and now I've jinxed myself. I've been running this motor for just about two years and It has been flawless. The other day I was out pre-fishing for a BFL tournament and I got a check engine code. Loaded the boat and took to dealer and they have advised that my E.M.M. has died. Is this just some fluke situation, or is it something I've done? If not could I have done anything to have prevented this? Is this the tip of the iceberg and should I expect more electrical/computer problems? Lastly, I've been quoted a price of $1700.00 to repair. Is this price correct to repair a bad E.M.M. Thanks in advance for any information regarding my current situation.

Probably something that just happened, but do you still have wing nuts on the batteries? If so, they can loosen, and cause issues with the electronics....

I would recommend a BRP EMM over the older OMC ones.

778611 (Reman. BRP EMM 02-06) (They May Not Have Any)

I would NOT get the reman. (01) 778617 and I would NOT get the old one repaired.

All of the engines we updated to a BRP EMM have not had any repeat EMM failures & every OMC EMM that was repaired eventually failed again.

I'm glad you said something. I think I remember the tech saying something about having to take off the old one and sending it in to be read or checked or something along those lines. I'll call them as soon as they open in the morning to find out the exact repair they have in mind. Does the price I spoke of earlier sound like a replacement unit (BRP or OMC) or a reprogram, or a reman. unit?

What can cost 1700$ inside a EMM when a top line PC full eqpt'd would run you $1000 ?? and run circles around a EMM doing computing for gas, ignition, temp and other "small jobs" for a computer....

New BRP EMM $1286.65
Reman BRP EMM $966.65

I spoke with the tech this morning and he confirmed that a BRP EMM was being put on my motor. He said it was a re-manufactured BRP EMM that he had ordered and he had to UPS my dead EMM out so they could download my information to the new EMM. If the part is $966.65 and I'm paying 7% state tax on this part I should be around $1034.32 at this time. My question is I have been quoted a total price of approx $1700.00 for total repair. Is $665.68 normal for shop time to make this repair, including diagnosing the problem? Are there any additional parts that I'm not aware of for this type of repair? There may be shipping 2 ways and it depends on what they needed to do for the diagnosis. They do have to send the other EMM back. They may also be quoting the new EMM because the remans are not always available.

I thought about that. That makes perfect sense to quote the higher price at the time (end of last week). They probably had no idea at that time if a re-manufactured E.M.M. would be available and I would quote the higher price to make sure I had my backside covered. I hope this is the case and the final bill will reflect a lower price if a re-manufactured E.M.M. is used. Thanks again for all your input regarding this matter.

Would there be a problem if one used a reman 586724 from DFI Technologies? Wouldn't it be the same as a BRP Reman??

When BRP took over, they discovered a number of things that they did not want to continue. One of the was the dismal quality of electronics circuitry that OMC had worked its way down to. They described the EMMs that OMC was buying as being somewhere below "hobby" quality. That was corrected in the 2002 model year.

I would absolutely avoid any circuitry that originally came from OMC. New or rebuilt.

I don't think you read my post correctly. I was pointing out that DFI Technologies was selling reman BRP EMM in addition to the older OMC EMMs.

I guess it would be OK but I would compare the price with BRP's because the labor is also covered in the one year warranty if a BRP one had an issue. DFI does not pay labor. At least they have never paid us labor.

I'm not sure if DFI just fixes the old board or changes the board. I believe the insides on the BRP Reman are new.
