Trying to smooth out a 93 evinrude 40hp. unhooked the vro oil system, engine will crank up very easy, but will act like its running out of gas. When i push the choke in, it cleans up for just a minute then back to dying out again. I can stand there and push the choke in everytime it does it, and will run all day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start?
I've got the same problem... I had my carbs rebuilt. and then took it to the lake for the first time... couldn't get it to idle... I had to bump the choke to just get it in gear and moving.. once i was at about 1200 rpm It ran fine.. I took it back to the shop and they tried to adjust the idle.. took about 6 hours of working on it and they still didn't have it running right... they then decided to take the heads off and then we discovered the problem... the piston was too small for the bore of the cylinders... on all 6 cylinders... I'm now having to put a new top end in it... I got quoted $1800 bucks if it didn't have to go to the machine shop... I still had the hone marks in the sleeves. so I should be alright.. This is what i ran in to. Hope you dont have the same problem...
Depending on the wear on your engine this may be your problem, hopefully not.

I have other dealers bring me these 40's with the same problem, there is a adjustment screw on the carb that will most times fix the problem...no one seems to know how to adjust these carbs.

it just acts like its running out of gas, you can push the choke in and it will recover.
If this is ONLY at idle then that is what happens, the carbs are lean and the motor is running out of gas.
you can put it in gear , and it does the same thing, it will rev-up then start falling back, push in choke, it recovers slowly, then back to falling back again
I ran some seafoam through it, it seemed to help, but still dying out. i'm gonna down the carbs, get rid of the varnish, it's been sitting up for a couple of years.
Rusty: does this engine have the recycle valves like my venom has? if so should he check them , I know Champ and I had that problem with my venom, and when we put on new valves it purred like a kitten. just wondering?

I think when you take the VRO off of an Evinrude you have to put a different fuel pump
on it! Better take it to a qualified mechanic or get a shop manual for your motor. You
may be constantly starving your motor for fuel. This is not good. If its not fueling, its not
lubing either. BOOM!!!
It is fueling, no doubt, i took and doubled the oil in the tank, just to make sure, and it is smoking like a tar kettle, hehe, when it runs, I have ordered carb kits, i'm gonna build those and see if it helps it. It's really trying to run, but it acts like its full of varnish or something of the nature. you mentioned fuel pump, i haven't been able to find the blasted thing on this motor?
You Do Not need to replace the fuel pump when disabling the oil side of the VRO......The Fuel pump is the big black plastic thing on the left side of the air box (looking from behind the motor). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
well i thought so, but i'm used to working on mercurys. Everything is located in different locations on these rudes. thanks, i'll let you know how the carb build goes.

The inline engines are very sensitive to proper synchronization. They are particularly prone to doing what you are describing when the throttle plates are not completely closed at idle.
Often, a loose or worn throttle cable simply won't pull the throttle cam roller off of the cam at idle anymore and the throttle plates remain open just a tiny bit. That's all it takes.
