First Rod Build Question

So I took the plunge this week and ordered the complete tool kit from Mudhole as well as the components to build a light action crappie rod. I ordered a split grip kit with it and had a question about how much of a gap do you guys typically put in your split grip between the reel and the butt. I read on another site about setting the reel seet to where the rod would balance off the center of it. I did that but had way to much blank behind the reel for my comfort so I went a head and backed it down a bit so the butt is about half way down my arm not to my elbow when holding the reel. Just figured i'd ask how the experts look at it since this is my first build.

You pretty much have it figured out. There is no standard measurement for the gap between the butt and the butt cap. Rather, the gap is what is left after everything else is in its proper place. My primary focus would be placing them to where they fit my forearm when fighting a fish. How it sits in a rod holder might be important, if you are going to spider rig with the rod.

as said above. There is not standard spacing between the grip and butt. Set the reel seat and grip to whatever feels good in your hand. Thats the beauty of a custom build.

This is very true.. I would measure though what type of handle length you like though. You could ream your parts out, fit them on the blank, then tape your guides on. Put a reel on it then move things around after. Make sure you mark them with a china marker so you can slide the parts off to do the final glueing. BTW, doing this method will insure that you will always get your measurements correct. Sometimes "guidelines" are a tad bit out of spec. Putting a reel on your rod after your guides have been taped up allows you to move your guides up or down to insure the line does not touch your blank!

Depends a lot on the length of the rod. Most of my crappie builds end up with a 4"-6" spacing between the grip and butt. I'd be glad to assist with anything if you need it.

Boy your close too lol. I managed to get it together and got all the guides wrapped getting ready to put the finish on the wraps.
