New to the Champ fam! Picked up a new used Champion, and need your suggestions!
I picked up a 1990 Champion bass boat, 20 footer, dual console. Hopefully it was a wise choice. I've been waiting and waiting for an Allison XTB, but this one came up for sale local. It's a barn boat that needs work, but for $3300 I am hoping it is worth it.
Question #1 - Is this a 201 DC? Here is the hull tag
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...h_IMG_7651.jpg
Question #2 - What is the best cover for a reasonable price for this boat? Are the covers from Bass Pro descent?
Question #3- This boat hasn't been in the water in 6 years. It hasn't been ran on muffs for over 3 years. I'm sure the carbs need work, etc. I know I have to drain the tank and clean it. What else should I be doing? Are there any performance mods I can do to the carbs when I rebuild them? Where is a good place to get parts? It has a new water pump in it 3 years ago
And the pics

Congrats, the hull and trailer are worth what you paid for the rig. I would take the engine to a professional for service since it has been that long without being run. Best of luck.

Built in Mtn Home, Ar in May of 1990 is the only info I can get from the HIN..
My 1990 brochure is at home in VA and I am in LA at the Classic (yea Skeet!!!), but it sure should be a 201. Measure center line...that should tell you!
Welcome to the Champion family!!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

I would suggest not starting that motor yourself.
I'd take it to a Merc dealer, and let them go over it, and get it running.
Being it sat for that long, it may need manually lubed a bit, for safety sake.
Great deal on a great boat for sure! http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

Thanks guys. The boat is about 2 hours away from me for the next 2 weeks, but I can't wait to see what a few days worth of wet sanding and polishing will do. I might get tot he carpet this spring, but I'll probably wait on that.
where is the best place to get a cover for these 201s?

Wow, $500-600 was more than I wanted to spend.
I was thinking more allong the lines of something like this, but I am not sure how it would fit with the dual console windscreens

Re: New to the Champ fam! Picked up a new used Cha ... (wbones9)
It maybe alot up front but to have a fitted cover versus the makeshift one...I forgot the rest.Good things aren't cheap and cheap things aren't good.
Re: New to the Champ fam! Picked up a new used Cha ... (frank od)
One other thing on the cover, the 201s have a very long front deck compared to most bass boats, so your typical out-of-the-box cover probably won't work. Check your local tarp and awning shops. They may can make you one at a little better price.
Dean's will have a fiile on your Hull ID# with the interior and tarp information when the boat was built. They can make a direct replacement without you having to provide any information to them. You'll need to call them to verify, but I can tell you it will be in the $500 range. I talked to them not too long ago, checking to see if they had a 201 cover in their "seconds" stash.
I'm also very familiar with the 90 model Champs (had a 90 176) and the 201s (currently have a 93 201 DCX), so don't hesitate to holler if I can be of help. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
Re: New to the Champ fam! Picked up a new used Champion, and need ... (wbones9)
I tore my cover last fall and replaced with a walmart cover (about $200), it has been a lot better than I thought and fits pretty well. It is a towable cover and I have towed withthe cover, I looks like it may last a couble of more years, even thought I expected to need replace it in about a year. Not bad, to use until you can afford better. My 201 DC looks just like yours except color. Welcome.

I wouldn't spend that kinda of money either. I'd look around for a semi custom cover. Cabelas sells some nice ones for under $200.00. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/glasses.gif
Re: New to the Champ fam! Picked up a new used Champion, and need ... (wbones9)
I bought a used Merc that had been setting up for 6 years and removed the plugs and cleaned them and drained the carbs.. Then I sprayed wd-40 in each cylinder and used a socket and pull bar to turn over the motor. (disconnect battery first)
Later that day I cranked it up and it ran fine. The hoses on the motor and fuel line should be changed. Good luck and welcome to the Champion family. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif
