How often do people really see 2-3ft waves?
I keep reading about how oh "my boat took those 2-3 ft wave no problem at WOT". EXACTLY how big is a 2-3 ft wave? Where do you measure from? I find it extremely hard to believe that some of these guys are really experiencing 3 ft waves at WOT. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif Especially in some of the boats they are reporting being in.

It is not uncommon to see 3 footers around here with KY Lake.
You see HUGE wakes behind the barges all the time on the local Cumberland River. When I say HUGE I mean you cannot see over them. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif
I've not been in any boat that will run honest 3 footers at WOT....well maybe if they are running a 9.9HP motor on a 20 footer. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

Lake Tawakoni & Texoma in TX see 4-5+ ft waves...I was out in 2 wks ago @ Tawakoni & had no problem zoomin thru...I was @ 55 mp jumpin out of waves completely! I did take on a little water on crosswind turns @ 30mph or so but the 184 handled with flyin colors! I can get on water that some would not!

Check out this thread.....there is a bit of a debate how waves are measured on pages 11 & 12....

This is how I always believed waves were measured

I ran 3 foot rollers at speed. Not WOT but was going fast enough to get air on just about every wave and the boat was dry on the floor when we were done. Rough ride but it is better than smacking waves at slow speed. If they are any bigger than 3 feet I just struggle along slow at 45 degrees.

w'ell get video next time...if it will stay in the boat! HA!
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (jmeasley99)
My question is why would you run WOT in those waves, you cant tell me that at least a few of those waves you came down pretty hard, that person may find a few more spider webs the next time he wipes her down..I enjoy just cruising over any size wave at a resonable speed and let the boats hull do it job and let me keep my back aligned....

knowing HOW my boat performs is very important! Also I got kinda stuck out in the weather...I ran from Rabbit cove down to the dam and the wind shifted on me...Coming back WOT was actually better than going slower believe it or not!

Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (jmeasley99)
Being on Erie all the time I know I have seen 2-3 footers, as far as speed, my speed is determined by how hard my champs hitting or a safe speed, never have I run my 206 WOT in 2-3 footers, doesn't mean I couldn't try, but I do not get free boats and am not out to beat mine to death, wanna get back with TM in the bow and electronics still attached to the boat. Now I might trim down on 2 and 3's and plow though, but a good 4 blade prop helps also, keeps the rear end down.
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (jmeasley99)
I didn't say that you don't see big waves. I said who REALLY runs those big waves at high speed?
I think alot folks misjudge exactly how big waves are. I was out on friday and the wind was blowing 40 MPH but I don't think I saw over a 2 ft wave. And I didn't even come close to running WOT. Of cours the lake was high and the boat lane markers were a little off of the channel.
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (Champer196)
Obviously know one takes a tape measure and and measures the height of the waves so 4ft waves to somebody could be only 2ft. Its like a the fish that came off. "It was easy 10lbs", Prove it. Everybody exagerates and know one actually knows how big they are.
I experience some pretty big waves on the river. Especially when you get a wind coming out of the south blowing straight up the river. The mix of current and wind makes waves very big and dangerous. The biggest I have honestly been in I would say were 4ftrs. not really sure, but I went down in a trough and couldn't see over the top so they were big. I only speared one wave that day and had a 21 ranger right next to me that was spearing them like he was trying to spear them. Its all in the driver and at that point no boat is going to ride that good.

we see them alot here in west texs where the wind always blows, sometimes a 2 foot day is a calm day around here! Amistad can get pretty nasty at times
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (Bitman)
This post and some of its responses really surprise me. The main reason I went to a Champion was for the ride. Here in Az we commonly get 3 footers and when the monsoons hit before a night tourney 5 footers are common. Not to mention on Powell where 8 to 10 footers happen ocassionally.
I run my 198 at 50 to 55 mph in 4s and up to 5s depending on how far apart the waves are. In 3s or less Im pretty wide open, allthough Im only trimmed about half. The key is to keep the nose down but NOT low enough to spear a wave. In fact, at those speeds, its much smoother than running slow and beating it to death. I dont have any bow slap or hop at all. If your bouncn or blowing out your prop, you most likely are trimmed out to much.

Yea...like the first day I ever had my boat on the water (when I saw you in the morning).....Trying to break in my motor on 4' & 5' footers was a blast......having to try and keep the Rpm's over 4500 was not easy (just ask my partner).....then to boot....I never had a "hot foot" before......so needless to say I was all jacked up that day......Though in the end, that 200 did an awesome job in that big water...

Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (Rackman)
Im sure that was an interesting day for you Dan especialy with no hot foot experience. And as you well know, I blasted around windy hill hammer down and half trimmed. I cant wait for my new 203 to get here. My partners got one and as good as my 198 is, his 203 is unreal.
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (basman1313)
I have seen 8 footers on Bay of Green Bay, 4-6 footers are pretty common, and you are not running WOT! If somebody knows how to post pictures from emails,I will send you some from a tourny on May 17 and 18, guys standing their boats up at about 45 degrees in 4-5 footers.
Re: How often do people really see 2-3ft waves? (badgerbass)
Jack--Your probably right about them not running them at WOT but take the 4-hour trek to Lake of the Ozarks and I will have you praying for 3-footers
