Tachometer problem 1991 Champion, 1990 Evinrude 175XP
Hi All,
I just finished rebuilding my 1990 175XP Evinrude Crossflow and was breaking it in when I noticed that the Tachometer is not functioning. I checked all the wiring but cannot seem to locate the connection problem. I turn the key on and it zeros out but when I fire the engine up it stays at zero. I connected a good tach on the dash and it did the same thing. Anyone have any suggestions. I ran a continuity test from the grey wire on the tach to the gray off the connections on the strip but got nothing. I am hoping that someone else can give me a starting point to troubleshoot this issue. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/praying.gif Thanks

I'm not at the house right now, but if memory serves correctly you can connect the tach at the motor and verify. Follow the leads from the terminal strip to the cable and go from there. Make sure you have all the connections at the strip.

So let me get this straight. I am assuming that the strip you are talking about is right above the powerpack. If this is so then the grey wire attached to the third connector from the top is the connection I am looking for. According to the manual, the real Evinrude manual, the grey wire is for the tach and it was never touched during the whole overhaul so I am assuming it is connected right. I am confused as to what I am supposed to do from the terminal. I believe that the grey wire goes to the rectifier/regulator and then from there goes to the main plug but since I am not home I am not sure.
