1991 Fast strike 150 question
Going with a friend on Saturday to pick up a new to him Ranger with a 91 fast strike 150 on it. I had a 97 fast Strike on my BassCat when I had one ,and a 90 horse Johnson 86 vintage when I had a pleasure boat & both still running without a problem.
Does anyone know of any issues with the older fast strikes that we will need to watch for? I know I will be helping him with the learning process as this will be his first large outboard. The only thing I remember was they worried about alchohol affecting the diaphrams in the VRO pump.As long as the pump has been updated it should be fine?
Thanks in advance.
Re: 1991 Fast strike 150 question (cape cod basser)
Yep Pat that is a semi hot motor, pull the Airbox off and check the VRO out, if it has a silver collar held down by 2 torx screws on the fuel to motor side then it has the new style VRO if not it hasn't been updated but don't let that deter him. He can replace the VRO for about $290.00 and rest easy. Just make sure the comp checks out on it. 10% over all 6. Pull the plugs and check them to look for rich/lean on them, pop the lower LU drain plug and check for milky or H20 coming out of the LU. Just general stuff.

Having the compression test done at the dealer. Will check the vro but don't think I'll be able to get the dealer to update it. From the look of the motor condition when I looked it over for him on saturday, I don't think there will be a problem. The thing is spotless and it had nothing to do with the dealer as the boat was traded twenty minutes before we got there.
Thanks for the tip, will check the pump closer on saturday.
