i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic
I bought a boat this past January & needed to take it in for lower unit seals, speedo line repair, a tune-up & a good checkup. we walked out to my boat & went over all this. Well...........I get the call that my boat is done & all is well, when I asked him what he found & what not I asked how speedo repair went, he said ummmmm I never fixed that, I nicely said we went over that & you thought no problem, ok he says, I'll check it out. He calls back an hour later & says he will have to pull the LU off again & yada yada yada & that I'd be looking @ another $100 or so for him to go in & do this. So beings he forgot to do this the 1st time he had the LU off its going.to cost me an extra $100????????? Wow! What would you folks do?

Take the initial hit b/c theres not to much you can do at this point and never go back. Find a more reputable service center if you can.

You would have more leverage with a copy of a work order. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Unless you really want it, the speedo is almost useless. Save your money.

believe me that's the 1st thing I thought of, this will never happen to me again. I'll ask for a copy of the work order or my phone takes excellent pics so I'll take a pic of the work order.
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (bassman34)
What would I do? I would say you should fix it for free since you screwed up or I will go to another shop and buy a manual and fix it my self.

Ya I know what you mean, I just like everything hooked up & working as it should.
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (bassman34)
Forget about the speedo. Speedometers on boats are worthless! It will get clogged again in no time. I believe they should quit putting them on boats, most guys have gps anyway.

Ha! Yours is junk... mine says it's going 35 right now, on the trailer in the garage http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
I agree, boat speedos are useless.
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (bassman34)
I would give them an opportunity to make it right. I would remind him (as you did) and attempt to reach an understanding with him that the speedo was a part of the agreement made up front. If the mechanic or business would not honor it without charging you an additional $100 dollars I would take my business elsewhere based on principle. When I mess up in my business, I have to honor my end and eat it when I make a mistake, otherwise I lose that client and future clients. There is no way I could give them another cent of my money. Furthermore, I would make it my duty to inform anyone that may need their services by honestly sharing my experience to save them from getting hosed like you did.
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (bassman34)
If the rest of the work was quality and you are satisfied, then I'd be inclined to give him a mulligan this time around because the speedo is useless and quality mechanics are hard to find. But he should be tweaking the price he charged because the speedo wasn't done.

Show up to his shop wearing nothing but a speedo and tell him that there was a misunderstanding when you were playing around with your lower unit.

Now that's just wrong on so many levels.
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (Table Rock Special)
You should be greatful you have a mechanic. In the area I live there is a half dozen or more boat dealers, and I have yet to find a mechanic. Parts changers yes mechanics??
Re: i think im getting hosed by my boat mechanic (hse87)
I did that "walk around" thing too ... Didn't write anything down. After the work was done ....... Some of the things were not done but other things not known about at first were done.
I'd also say screw the speedo ...... Sonar/GPS will quickly take it's place even if it did work.
PS the gas gauge will prolly quit soon too.
