Wearing out thrust washers 225 hpdi

I have a 2005 hpdi. I run a 25-t1 vmax series prop. Two weeks ago I noticed my thrust washer was worn causing my prop to rub the lower unit housing a tad bit. I ordered the two piece washer set from boats.net and thinking it was wrong I didn't install it. I was able to get a new one piece washer which was exactly like my old one. I ran it for one tournament (maybe a 20 mile round trip) and it's worn down already and causing the prop to be loose again. I expect that this new two peice washer set is the right part but it's not seating right on the taper of the prop shaft. Is this normal? Also the other piece doesn't seat tight in my prop. I have also noticed that maybe my hub has slightly moved back which causes me to not be able to tighten the two piece washer set down like I want to. In other words I can't make the spline washer grab any of the spline and I won't be able to get a cotter pin in. I know this is kind of confusing but I was just wondering if any one else has experienced this type of problem. Any help would be appreciated.

The two piece thrust washer is better but can still fail.

Yamaha has issued a bulletin or two regarding (1) more torque being applied to the propeller nut and (2) the need to retorque the nut after about an hours ust at a high power stting.

For example, Mercury's torque setting from memory is about 100 lb-ft. Yamaha's published value was 40 lb-ft but that has been increased. Yamaha never said to retorque the nut whereas Mercury said to do it. Retorquing might help and can't hurt.

Oh, the Guardian thrust washer for a Yamaha had a wrong approach angle. If the earlier Guardian thrust washer is used it can be very problematic.

The guardian washer is the two piece? What I'm worried about is nothing is sitting flush. Once I tighten it it all seems fine but I can't get enough of the nut down to put the cotter pin in. I'm wondering if my hub could have walked back in the prop a little bit and it's causing me to not be able to tighten it enough.

The two piece thrust washer for my SHO had to be cranked down hard so that the two parts seated correctly. I thought I was doing something wrong and called my mechanic - he said that it was normal and just to crank it down and it will seat - then you should be able to see the shaft and cotter pin hole. This was for the SHO, not sure if it's the same with the HPDI.

Well I pressed my hub a little further in and tightened it down really good now it seems like it's ok..guess I have to wait until Friday or Saturday when I run it to see how it goes..thanks

I was at a tourney last year that had the Yamaha support trailer present. I noticed my prop was loose so I asked them to torque it for me. They replaced the thrust washer and showed me where the hub had moved relative to the prop (due to wear on the thrust washer). The tech said to torque it to 100 ft lbs and then run it a day or two and re-torque it. I checked it a couple days later...it wasn't rattling around, but it had loosened. The nut rotated...I forget, maybe 1/2 to 3/4th of a turn, to bring it back to 100 ft lbs. One thing he showed me was that the thick splined washer on the rear was flush with the outer part of the hub when it was installed correctly.

Sorry for the confusion.

No, the Guardian TW is one piece. I only brought it up because a problem with earlier versions of it that could cause a prop to loosen and move forward into the gear case.

The improved Guardian thrust washer, the original Yam one piece TW or the Yam two piece TW, when properly torqued and retorqued should not have any further issues.

Anytime - that sounded like what it was - just make sure to retighten after your first use.

I had 100 percent same issue as you in my 2005 225 HPDI and it was where my hub was spun and wasn't tight. It was tight enough to not be able to spin by hand but upon close inspection you could tell it was spun about a half inch and that was my problem. Actually just bought a tempest 27 and run mercury Flo hub kit and hasn't done it since..... idk but its worth a look

I'm gonna give that a try because I just ran mine all over des allemands..came back and the new washer was worn down slightly again
