On my 2004 90ETC is has a plastic ÂLÂ coming out of the gear case. On top of that is where the pitot tube would be placed. It is covered with a plug. I never connected the pitot tube hose .
From what you describe it sounds like the ÂLÂ is not present and debris gets in the hole and you drill it out. Is the issue if you drilled too far? I would think you would have to put some pressure on the drill bit to get through the gear case and you would know the difference between debris and solid aluminum.
I am no outboard mechanic but I would seal the thing with marine grade silicone and if that did not work go to the OMC parts place and get the ÂLÂ with the cover.
