Speedo Pick Up Tube ?

Guys, I have a stupid question but curosity has gotten the best of me. Have a 1992 150 Intruder with the speedo pick up tube on the leading edge of the motor just above the nose cone. It stays full of wood, etc all the time and I take a small drill bit and drill it out. My question is this: What if I were to take a drill bit and place in drill motor to do this and went too far and drill thru the tube. Would that hurt anything other than the speedometer would probably quit working? I have a gps and only use the boat speedometer as a conversation piece anyway.

On my 2004 90ETC is has a plastic “L” coming out of the gear case. On top of that is where the pitot tube would be placed. It is covered with a plug. I never connected the pitot tube hose .

From what you describe it sounds like the “L” is not present and debris gets in the hole and you drill it out. Is the issue if you drilled too far? I would think you would have to put some pressure on the drill bit to get through the gear case and you would know the difference between debris and solid aluminum.

I am no outboard mechanic but I would seal the thing with marine grade silicone and if that did not work go to the OMC parts place and get the “L” with the cover.

Thanks Guys, haven't struck oil yet so I guess I'm ok for now. Thinking about just letting it fill up with junk and not worrying about it but it just drives me nuts to see the speedo stuck on 45 mph all the time. Thanks again.
