1995 Evinrude 200 Vindicator Lower Unit Reseal
I was changing the LU oil today and had a lot of water come out when I drained it. I pulled the prop and found some fireline rapped around the shaft by the seal. I pulled the line out and flushed the gearcase out with diesel and ran air through it for about 1/2 hour and re-serviced it. I'm going to try it tomorrow and drain again and check for water. How hard is it to reseal the LU, especially the seal by the propeller?

On that year model if it has never been totally resealed, it needs to be done. If you do it yourself, get a manual first. If it looks like too much to handle, you may want to get a tech to do it. It's not hard, but it's all relative to mechanical ability. If you had fire line in it, you need to replace the propshaft seal for sure. The super lines shave off the sealing edges of the seals. The next time you use it it may let ALL the lube out and kill your lower unit. A little water on the bearings and races will damage it quickly. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

If you have the basic seal installers and a manual, a puller set, you'll be good to go!! http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
Re: 1995 Evinrude 200 Vindicator Lower Unit Reseal (rudetech1)
I resealed the lower unit and it was still leaking so I removed it again and did a pressure and it was leaking from the main shaft seal. I inspected the bearing and shaft and they looked good.
According to the manual there is 2 different configurations on the seals. One has a single seal and the other configuration is two seals installed back to back. Mine had the single seal configuration. I changed it out with the single seal that came in the kit and this is the one that was leaking.
I removed the single seal and installed the double seals that came in the kit and it pressure checked good. Does anybody now if this is acceptable?
Re: 1995 Evinrude 200 Vindicator Lower Unit Reseal (akita8)
According to the factory bulletins, they do not recommend using 2 seals in the upper bearing housing for the driveshaft if it originally had the single seal. They say to buy a new housing that comes with 2 seals.
On the propshaft bearing housing, it is OK to substitute the single seal for 2 seals installed back to back. That is why there is no large single seal included in the factory seal kit.

I'll use it the way it is for now but will get another housing on order.
Thanks for the info.
