1971 85hp Evinrude...more problems

I finnaly got the old thing running but dont have any power... it seems to be fuel starved.. but when i give more throttle it stalls... when i spray carb cleaner in the carb it seems to pick up... I think that it is probly only running on two cylinders... their is spark and compression on all four, and the fuel system including the carbs is all spotless...after running with no power for a little while, the thing on the back, im not even sure what it is its above the power pack a little to the right started smoking and cracked...i think it might be a voltage regulater?? im not sure... o dont even know if this is a related problem.... any help or ideas???

Pull the carbs and rebuild them. Pay special attention to the low speed and High jets and make sure you can pass carb cleaning fluid through all four of each. And smoking a regualtor is never good. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif

I have had the carbs off and they seem immaculate... and cleaner passe through everywhere... and as far as the smoking regualator im not sure that it is even a regulator do you know if thats what that is?? or what could have caused it to go bad??

Im thinking about selling this old motor and buying somthing thats more dependable... any idea how much an old 85horse evinrude is worth that runs poorly??

Probably not worth much. If it shifts well, you might get the interest of someone who nees an old hydro-electric gearcase.
