Fortunately, mine has not had to be used to save me.... yet.
Once on Erie, got tossed out of a charter boat by my dumb butt losing balance.
Another time not paying attn to my trim angle and bow hooking my boat. That one was a little more scary. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

That had to hurt. Did it knock you unconcious?
Tournament takeoff. In a hurry to get to our fish about 25 miles away. We knew several other guys were on the same fish so i drove as hard as she would go. At the time I had a Gambler with a merc 250XB. Rounded a corner and hit a boat wake wrong next thing I know I was skipping across the water. Did'nt get knocked out but I butted heads with my partner and was bleeding pretty bad. I did'nt hurt till the next day. Hope it never happens again.
I've never been saved by mine, but I did bow hook a Ranger one day and threw my practice partner out at about 65. Neither of us had a life vest on and that is the last day I ever ran one without it on. I got lucky that day and neither of us was hurt and all that happened to him was he got wet (and pretty angry).
Just having mine on gives me a little piece of mind.... the big motor never gets turned over till we have our PFD's on http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
There has been a couple guys I knew here that are no longer here because they weren't wearing one.

Dang Preston. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif Glad you were ok. Probably was a blink of an eye and you were overboard.
Preston, not yet however my motorcycle helmet saved my life when I dropped the Harley years ago. Good post!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif
I drop the tip of a wake board and face planted/pancaked the water had I not had a got ski jacket on I would have drowned as I couldn't swim until I caught my breath. We were only going 15-20 mph. I can't imagine how bad it would hurt to do that going 50-80 or faster and get chucked out. Also if it wasn't for motorcycle helmets I would for sure be dead, and will not ride a street/dirt bike with out a helmet on.

+1, I would be dead had it not been for a motorcycle helmet when I was 24 years old. I consider the lfie jacket just as important.
Hasn't saved me yet... But if I ever get pitched out while running down the lake it'll have the chance. Like Nick said, it's alway on if the big motor's running. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
Ive had 2 close calls. Both times I had a gaurdian angel but no PFD.
The first time I ever went fishing was when I was 9. We were on a jetty in the Ct river. My brother saw a bucket floating on a pile of debris and said we needed it to put our fish in. I climbed down to pick it as it went by and tumbled into the current in 15 feet of water. I was taking swimming lessons that summer but had not learned to swim in deep water yet. Somehow I managed to stay above the surface till my brother reached me.
The second time was when I was 32 and I was fishing my favorite small lake in a 10 ft canoe. It was 100 degrees plus out. I took the day off from working after pulling doubleshifts for weeks. I was putting in extra hours being self employed so I could put up the cash for the insurance so I could hire help.
That day I was tossing a popper in some pockets in the lilly pads with great results. In one location I caught six bass. I was flipping the popper out of the water with a hard pull so I didnt have to drag it through the pads. On one of the flips I impaled my knee with the hooks. When I tried to remove it I felt dizzy. The combination of physical exhaustion and 100 degree heat made me queasy when I pulled at the hooks. I placed my rod in the canoe sideways and put my arms against the rails of the canoe anticipating a dizzy spell.
Next thing I recall was the sound of rushing water and I was awakened by a vision of water running off someones head like when you get out from under the shower. I could see someone standing up in the lake and the water coming off their head. Then I regained conscious and became aware that it was me that I had seen. The rushing water sound was the water filling up my mouth and lungs.
I looked around and became aware of my surroundings. My memory was intact and the first thing I did was look for my rods in the water and do an inventory of the baits I was using. I paddled back to where I launched. On the way I tried to get the attention of a woman in a row boat but she ignored me. I wanted to talk to someone to make sure I wasnt in shock as I did not know how long I was under water. When I beached the boat there was a young couple having a picnic. I tried to talk to them but they left before I could get ashore. I must of looked like the swamp thing covered in black soot from the lake bottom with a lure dangling from my leg.
I loaded the canoe and my tackle then drove myself to a local hospital. It took the doctor 10 minutes to get the hook out. The black soot was still coming from my sinus for about 4 or 5 days when I showered and tried to exhale it. I was still coughing up water for a couple days also.
IMO the only thing that saved me from drowning aside from the fact I was in 4 feet of water was that I was physically fit from working double shifts for so long. The second thing was that I was taking a short nap at noon every day and I was used to regaining conscious at a moments notice. If I had fallen asleep instead of being awakened from the sounds I heard I was a goner.
I havent come out of the boat,
but bow hooked onced and stood it up
on the stern once. scary stuff.
Every time I ski.
