Re: Lab puppy (2bassinbob)
I would think you use an antler as a toy. Play fetch and what ever eles he like to play but keep the antler in the play time. You may want to dull the tips of the antlers up though.

Re: Lab puppy (2bassinbob)
Get a shed and play games with him. Toss is just a short distance, then really praise him when he pics it up. Then start tossing it in the bushes and tell him to "hunt it up". Just make a game out of it around the yard. Start hiding it in the bushes before you bring him out of the house, when you bring him out tell him to "hunt it up" and take him close to where you hid the shed. Then when you take him out hunting sheds with you tell him to "hunt it up" it will not take long he will be finding them for you.
Re: Lab puppy (2bassinbob)
I assume if you hunt sheds you are a deer hunter also. IMHO a Lab makes one of the best trail dogs you will ever find for wounded deer, and can be really easy to teach him to do.

Thanks guys. will start working with him today. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif
Re: Lab puppy (2bassinbob)
Great looking dog, mine is 10 months as well. Out of curiosity how much does he weigh? Agree with others about the training. Mine started playing with a small piece of 2x4 months ago and now scrap wood doesn't stand a chance in my basement or garage! Pickling he doesn't chew it just runs around with it. Best dog breed IMO

Yep... They are so incredibly versatile. Here's a shot of me and my lab, Deets (http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/crying.gif RIP, buddy) with the last deer he ever helped recover... One of my brother's bow bucks from last year...

And ol' Deets really got into his work... Didn't matter, buck or doe, as soon as you started to drag or load the deer, he'd let you know it was "his." http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif ...

You've got a great looking pup / buddy there, Bob... Best of luck with him! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

He'll run off and join a deer cult and you'll never see him again....

Re: Lab puppy (2bassinbob)
play a game where you hide the sheds around the yard. Start off at easy hiding spots. When he finds them, give him a treat. When you go out to the woods and he picks up the scent of antlers, he will look for them because he wants a treat. You also, need to get him to bark when he finds them otherwise, you will never know where he's at. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

I hope it helps !
I've trained more lab's to be waterfowl and field trial dogs than I can begin to count. But I've never trained a shed dog. Good Luck and have fun !
